It doesn’t need to be a complicated a air. A simple notebook with a small watercolour set or coloured pencils, or just pen or pencil are enough. e idea is to sketch, for example, an interesting feature in a landscape or a quirky-looking building, an unusual street sign, sailing boats, deer in a forest, beautiful sunset, castle on a hill, café chair – anything that grabs your attention or captures your imagination. It could be a detailed image or quick outline, and it doesn’t matter if it isn’t nished to perfection. Handwritten words, maybe a couple of sentences or short re ections, can be added alongside the sketches as reminders of what the light was like, what was special about the location or subject matter, and so on. It will serve as a pleasant keepsake of a holiday abroad or an enjoyable day trip. Creating a visual I always take my special little leather-bound journal. I pack a small watercolour set, pencil and a black ink pen.” She continues, “My journal is very precious to me and is a very personal memento, whether that’s from a safari in Africa or a walk in the New Forest.” Waterside Art Group meets on Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm at Hythe and Dibden Community Centre in Brinton Lane, o Jones Lane, Hythe SO45 6DU. Membership costs just £65 a year, which gives members the chance to attend weekly meetings and to show and sell their artwork at the summer exhibition. Or, for those not wanting to commit to a whole year, they can attend occasional meetings as a non-member for £5 a session (but they won’t have the option to enter the exhibition). Why not go along on a Tuesday evening for a free “taster” session? Or for further details about the Group and its programme, visit: www.watersideartgroup.co.uk or email: secretary@ watersideartgroup.co.uk Pages from Fran’s travel diary story, with drawings or small paintings representing the day’s activities, also becomes useful material to gather together at home to create a larger painting.
