Local people, as well as those from further a eld, were tempted out in the winter sunshine to join bus enthusiasts from far and wide to sample the rst free rides of the year. Well over 4000 passenger journeys were recorded during the day, comfortably more than double the number seen on 1st January 2025. e King Alfred buses, supported by several beautiful visiting vehicles, were very busy all day – with everyone enjoying travelling for nothing, of course! Sales of the souvenir Programme were so brisk that stocks had run out by lunchtime. Guest of Honour was Winchester’s Mayor, Councillor Major Sudhakar Achwal and his wife Vivian Achwal, who enjoyed a ride to Oliver’s Battery and back on the recently restored 1950 Leyland Titan HOR 811, surrounded by happy passengers enjoying the journey. ey chatted happily to everyone around them, to everyone’s delight and pleasure. Alfred Winchester Running Day it is a mecca for bus enthusiasts, with up to 50 buses and coaches in service, providing free bus rides to a very wide range of destinations in and around Winchester with something for everyone, across all generations, passionate about preserving these vehicles for future generations to come. There will be the usual Enthusiasts’ Bazaar, where all kinds of books and models and bus-related material can be had and this year for the first time the Winchester Morris men will be performing in the Abbey Gardens, right alongside the Broadway.” FoKAB’s Chair, James Freeman comments: “Our volunteers work tirelessly all though the year to prepare our historic vehicles to be ready to delight the public on our special Running Days. While New Year’s Day has been the traditional day for our Running Day each year, we realised about ten years ago that it’s warmer and the days are longer in May, so we shifted our emphasis from 1st January to the first Bank Holiday in May, 4th May this year. These May days are now our main event of the year. Called the Original King Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester joined fellow passengers and conductor James Freeman on a trip to Oliver’s Battery. In my own garages the temperature reached the icy low of 0.7°c. It’s ok to heat the garage by leaving the heater on for an hour to reach 12 or even 14°c, but the engine metal stays very cold at 0.7°c. Working on a cast iron engine block and cylinder head invites a bout of pain in oldies arthritic ngers - job abandoned until the outside temperature reaches 8°c! Warmer equals rain but the rain and rain! Caused minor ooding/ severe damp in one member’s garage. Perhaps the answer is to bring our vehicles into the lounge through the front window - central heating, eat your nosh whilst tinkering, tea and cake on hand, downstairs toilet…utopia. Dreaming? Well not quite. Previous house neighbour Chris the Harley Davidson did just that. Patio door in place of front window, drove in, lounge turned into Harley workshop, had 2, hence a winter project - no problem! Evening meetings take place the 2nd Thursday of the month, 7.15pm for a 7.30pm start at Netley Marsh Community Hall, Woodlands Road, SO40 7GE. Daytime morning meetup is last Thursday of the month, venue decided previously or at the previous evening meeting. If you wish to visit club night, please make yourself known to Pete the Chairman, and take along a mug! RSJ mecanique equipped SWB Land Rover – Toudorant, Morocco (Photo: Tony the Land Rover)
