It was a lovely a ernoon and Awards were presented by NFDC Vice Chairman Cllr Derek Tipp. e Doug Horrill Local Hero Award for 2019 was given to Pauline Jordan for all her work with older people in the local community. Pauline volunteers for the Black eld Bubble, teaches weekly memory groups and runs a gardening therapy service called hortic-therapy. ese groups are for isolated older people with dementia in the Waterside area and Pauline has worked tirelessly for many years with these groups. Esther Cli a Consultant Practitioner in Frailty for the Southern Health NHS gave an inspirational presentation on ‘Growing Older well’ and brought along the Frailty Car for everyone to view. anks go everyone who attended, helped and supported the group. Age Concern New Forest raised £486.50 for their Bartley Lunch Club from the Table Top Sale in September at Bartley Village Hall. Pauline Jordan receiving the Local Hero Award 2019 from NFDC Vice Chairman, Cllr Derek Tipp NHS Frailty Car The Body Through the Porthole Langley WI will be welcoming Steve Herra at their meeting on Tuesday 19th November to give his talk, ‘ e Body rough the Porthole’. A true story from 1947 when a young actress sailing from Cape Town to Southampton aboard the Durban Castle had a liaison with a deck steward. During one such liaison, she died and he pushed her body through the porthole! e ship was 90 miles from the nearest land and in shark infested waters. e audience act as jury and decide if the accused was guilty or not guilty of murder. The WI provides women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities. Langley WI also had a great day out at the Eling Tide Mill Experience in September. eir very enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer guide gave them a thorough insight into the workings of the very ancient Tide Mill. A er the tour, the group went into the Discovery Centre (pictured) to have fun with the interactive displays. Visitors are always very welcome. If you are interested in joining them, meetings are every third Tuesday at St Francis Church Hall, West Common, SO45 1XU at 7.30pm.
