Dog lovers have been invited to dress up their pooches for the Paws Spooktacular event at Itchen Valley Country Park in Southampton on Sunday 27th October . And daredevils will get the chance to brave hot coals for a rewalk in Southampton’s Guildhall Square on Friday 8th November . Both events will raise money for Countess Mountbatten Hospice, which became an independent charity in April and needs to raise more than £6 million a year to run its services. Hospice chief executive Nigel Hartley said: “Both of these events will be great fun and we hope to see lots of people getting involved to support their local hospice. “We need the community to get behind us as we look to develop our services to help more people in Southampton and across Hampshire.” For more details about both events, visit cmhcharity.org.uk Paws Spooktacular TREE PLANTING AND TREE GUARD REMOVAL Abbotswood Area for Nature Conservation (ANC), located adjacent to the new Abbotswood development, (SU364228) will be doing Pond Management on Sunday 27th October , from 10am until 12noon, meet at Abbotswood Play Area. Abbotswood ANC has been designated primarily due to the presence of great crested newts, a European protected species. e site contains a host of interesting habitats, including wetlands, ancient semi-natural woodland and grassland. ese support a wealth of wildlife including birds, mammals such as bats, and insects, including butter ies and dragon ies. e site also boasts 14 veteran oak trees, estimated to be over 300 years old and each a home to hundreds of other species, making them a hugely important part of the site. Abbotswood Conservation Volunteers are a local group working in Abbotswood Area of Nature Conservation, Romsey. A chance to explore the park a er dark searching for signs of nocturnal life including bats, owls and minibeasts – a great alternative to Halloween. Finish with hot chocolate and marshmallows around the re. Please Note: That this event will be held during the evening hours and will include times of limited visibility. Please ensure you are wearing sturdy footwear, and that all party members are dressed appropriately for the weather. Price: £5 per person . Car parking charges apply. e Countryside Education Trust is hosting its ever- popular Apple Day on Tuesday 29th October from 11am until 3pm in its Heritage Orchard at Home Farm, Beaulieu. Go along and enjoy an apple themed day, activities include apple pressing, apple themed games and cra s, baked apples in the re, a tombola and storytelling. Home Farm Apple juice will also be available to buy and a pop up café in the orchard will serve apple themed refreshments. As ever, the Countryside Education Trust’s wonderful volunteers will support the day. Parking and entry are free, though donations to the charity are always welcome, as it receives no government funding and needs to fundraise over £100,000 each year for all its exciting projects.
