Indeed, one of the advantages of the merger has been that patients can now be seen at both sites – Totton Health Centre and Forest Gate Surgery. Over the last year, we have successfully recruited two highly quali ed doctors as GP Partners and we are continuing to advertise for more GPs. We are still short, and the national shortage of doctors is not going to be resolved in the short-to-medium- term. is means that we have not been able to fully replace the doctor time lost and are consequently signi cantly short of appointments. ere are also national shortages of practice nursing sta . We are determined to continue to o er our patients the high level of service they are used to and have chosen to embrace new ways of working to achieve this. We are going to employ a variety of professionals; including Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Paramedics and Pharmacists, and o er a variety of consultations (telephone, online and face-to-face) to ensure patients continue to have access to timely and appropriate healthcare. is is of course a departure from the traditional model of General Practice, but we believe that through being innovative and dynamic we can protect and preserve both of our surgeries and the care of our patients. We ask for your support with these changes. Waterside Cancer Support Centre Men’s Group Generally, women tend to seek advice or support immediately they experience symptoms indicating the possibility of a cancer disorder. Men however, have a tendency to ignore or procrastinate under similar circumstances. Encouraging men to obtain prompt medical advice may prevent a serious outcome. Of equal importance is the desire to assist those males who are experiencing di culty coping with their own predicament, whether that be personal or someone they are supporting, the latter being particularly distressing, o en causing extreme anxiety, depression and an inward needless sense of guilt. e aim of the ‘Men’s Cancer Support Group’ is to provide a con dential environment, where men may freely discuss, without embarrassment, their personal feelings with others undergoing a similar plight, or in particular where they are in need of moral support. e group meetings are not conducted in an atmosphere of despondency (o en diverse subjects with humorous outcome occur) but one where individuals may express their emotions whilst receiving respect and understanding. e main objective is to support each other and provide a release mechanism from personal strife. A Facilitator (experienced counsellor) currently oversees meetings and is able to provide emotional support, if required. In the main the members as a unit create a self-governing environment where self-assurance, confidentiality, respect, honesty and understanding is paramount. Verbatim quotations made by individual members of the group for the purpose of this article include:- ‘Broad based and there to provide support,’ ‘Discrete and frank, o en resulting in unexpected insights’, ‘Invigorating and encouraging (we o en relate to each other as everyone has a story)’ ‘A friendship group, helping each other’ Meetings are held at Waterside Cancer Support Centre, e Grove, St Johns, Hythe, on the second ursday of the month between 7pm and 8.30pm with tea and co ee on o er from 6.30pm.
