He has a Master’s degree in Horticulture. Steve has travelled the globe visiting gardens. His slide show started at Perth at the King’s Park Botanical gardens and he travelled in a circle visiting National parks including Cape Le Grand and the Stirling range. Cape Le Grand used to be under the sea many years ago, so its soil is quite salty and plants have adapted to these conditions. Trees he saw include the Baobab, Eucalyptus and the Jacaranda tree which has beautiful purple owers. e Eucalyptus tree is successful in its seed dispersal and regrows and colonises remarkably fast. It can be found in the Blue Mountains. King’s Park Botanical gardens has a fantastic array of plants including the Kangaroo paw and the Banksia which is used by the aborigines as a torch as the ower head is a fuel source. He also saw many species of orchids. Steve told them that many Australian plants can be grown in the UK. e evening ended with Steve answering questions from the audience. e next meeting of the Dibden Purlieu Gardening Association will be on Thursday 7th November for a talk by Rosemary Legrand entitled ‘Spectacular South Africa’. e club is open to new members and if anyone is interested they can contact Chris Bennett (Secretary) on 023 8084 2006 e Association meets on the rst ursday of the month at St Andrew’s Centre, Dibden Purlieu, 7.30pm. Visitors welcome.
