Well known for her commitment to the local community she was a familiar gure behind the stall of the monthly Saturday Country Market in Hythe and the Friday market at St Andrew’s, Dibden Purlieu. Moving to Holbury in 1963 with her newly married husband John she joined Hythe Hospital League of Friends in 1976 a er the birth of her children Anthony, David and Jenny at the maternity unit there. From then on, she worked tirelessly to raise funds for the charity and in 1979 became its Treasurer. e fund-raising highlight of the year was the hospital Summer Fete organised by her. Her enthusiasm saw not only her own immediate family, but her parents, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends recruited to help the committee members man their stalls. e thousands of pounds raised bought the extras focus of the spending changed to providing equipment for the clinics of the visiting doctors and consultants. In the last year the League of Friends has donated over £30,000 for new equipment. Money from the charity is also earmarked to equip rooms in the new build hospital due for completion in 2021. In 2013 June Carr was deservedly awarded the British Empire Medal for her services to Hythe Hospital as Treasurer and fundraiser. She was accompanied by her family to an award ceremony in Winchester and later with John she attended a Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace. Amazingly she still found time, in the early 70’s’ to volunteer her help at Holbury Playgroup and eventually acting, as joint supervisor until it closed in 2004. She also was a volunteer for Hythe Hospital Day Centre and an active member of Black eld Ladies Circle. roughout her very active life she always found time to be a devoted wife, mum and grandma to her very close family. Many people have been touched by her kindness and generosity and this was evident in the packed chapel at her funeral service with people wanting to pay their respects to her. She will be greatly missed. e family would like to thank all relatives and friends for the donations made in memory of June. e Hampshire and Isle of Wight air Ambulance received £687 and Hythe Hospital League of Friends £1,682. for the wards ranging from bright new curtains and TV sets to extremely expensive specialist nursing beds and a variety of other equipment. e fund raising did not stop when the wards were closed, supported by her husband John as Committee Chairman, the ere was a Co ee Morning held at Tatchbury Manor Farm at the end of September to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. is was organised by Marie Hickman, Jayne Clarke, Karen Blayden and Sarah Hunt. Marie explained that members of their family and friends have been a ected by Cancer so they wanted to do something to raise funds for Macmillan. ere was a huge amount of tea and cakes on o er, all homemade by the family as well as a ra e that included a Spa day at Carey’s Manor, Romsey Show tickets, a ernoon tea and lots of other prizes. anks go to everyone who went along and supported the event. ey raised a staggering £1308.10.
