Every November, participating solicitors waive their fee for writing a basic Will, and instead invite their clients to make a donation to Will Aid. e scheme has been running since 1988, during which over 275,000 people have made a Will through the scheme, so getting the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their loved ones are protected if the worst happens, while the scheme has raised £16m for the vital work of these charities in the UK and around the world. To write a Will through Will Aid nd out which local solicitors are participating and contact your chosen solicitor directly to make an appointment. Your solicitor will advise you on what you need to take into consideration and will then dra your Will. e solicitor will waive their usual fee, inviting you to make a donation to the Will Aid charities instead. Suggested voluntary donations are £100 for a basic single Will or £180 for a pair of basic mirror Wills. If your Will is more complex, you and your solicitor can agree a separate fee for the extra work outside of the Will Aid arrangement. All the money raised by Will Aid is then divided between the nine Will Aid charities. News of disasters in developing countries catches the eye and tugs at our wallets and purses. Hythe & Waterside Rotary Club wanted to go further by nding a way in which they could help people in need to use their own resources to improve their lives - a hand-up rather than a hand-out. A year ago they decided to invest in Lend with Care, the micro- credit arm of Care International, a well- established charity. Using information about the entrepreneurs who are seeking loans they choose who they want to fund and how much they wish to give. So far they have made £1,300 available from the funds they have raised which has enabled 31 individuals to bene t. Each month they repay according to an agreed schedule. at money means that they can already fund an additional 19 people. So far they have decided to spread loans across a dozen countries and several di erent types of business - partly to minimise risk while they see how the scheme operates. It’s very encouraging to report that they haven’t yet had a single bad debt in spite of the very di cult situations in which many of the entrepreneurs live. Of course, they could decide at this stage to take their money back as loans are paid o . It would be the safe thing to do but as a club they want to take the risk of helping people to li themselves out of poverty with dignity. And so far it’s working!
