World War Two is now part of the national school curriculum, and the local areas of Lepe and Stanswood Bay were used to build 6 Phoenix caissons, which formed part of the famous Mulberry Harbours. ese were vital to the landings on the Normandy beaches. e Exhibition enabled the students to enrich their knowledge of the local area and the important role it played in the preparation for the embarkation of troops and vehicles as part of the D-Day landings. Thousands of troops, vehicles and supplies le from these beaches. e Exhibition provides a wealth of information, maps and diagrams, explaining the many aspects of the logistics of this enormous embarkation which played a vital role in helping to end this terrible war. A very popular display item was the ‘bomb map’ kindly lent to the Exhibition by Fawley Parish Council. is depicts the area of Waterside fromHythe to the Solent, and Exbury, pinpointing the quantity and type of bombs that were dropped on the area by the enemy. Comments from the students included ‘it has taught me a lot and it was interesting’, ‘very interesting and fun’ and ‘the map is cool and signi cant’. The history teacher, Alice Woolley, running the sessions, commented: “The Lepe D-Day Exhibition was an engaging and informative tool to support Year 9 students at the New Forest Academy who have been studying World War Two in their History lessons. A fantastic learning experience for students to really understand how their local area was vital for the success of D-Day”. e Academy Principal, Mrs Karen Godsall commented: “What a fantastic Exhibition!” e Exhibition will be on display from 15th April to 28th May in the foyer of the Hampshire Records O ce, Winchester, for anyone interested in viewing it.
