Care UK’s Carpathia Grange care home, on Southampton Road, was opened by the Chairman of the New Forest District Council, Councillor Allan Glass, and Carpathia Grange’s rst resident, Freda Bale. During the event, MalcolmKitson was announced as the winner of the Local Heroes competition, which was launched by Carpathia Grange to celebrate the home’s opening and rewarded local people or organisations which go above and beyond for their community, friends or family. Having spent almost two decades volunteering at Southampton General Hospital, Malcolm’s devotion to improving the lives of the patients impressed the jury, who decided to award him the rst prize trophy and £300. His training scheme for volunteers has already bene tted hundreds of young people, and he was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his work in mentoring and recruiting. e Horrill Day Centre, a charity which supports 70 to 80 older people a week to remain as independent as possible, received the second prize trophy and £200, while Sylvia Burman, a well-known gure in the community for her active involvement in the Waterside Good Neighbours scheme, received the third prize trophy and £100. On the day of the grand launch, visitors were greeted by a professional harpist, and tapped their feet to live entertainment from a jazz band, which got everyone in the party spirit. Residents and guests even had the opportunity to meet a variety of animals up close, including an owl, a hedgehog and an iguana, brought along by the Creature Teachers. ose who attended the event also had the chance to meet the friendly team at Carpathia Grange and take a tour of the new care home. Carpathia Grange home manager, Ray Arnold, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Chairman of the New Forest District Council to officially open the home and mark this important milestone. “The residents had a fantastic time celebrating, and enjoyed preparing for the event by helping to decorate the home. Having animals visit us was a brilliant addition to the day, and being able to pet and interact with them really put a smile on everyone’s faces. After such a successful event, we are already looking forward to our next celebration!” e new three-storey care home, which provides residential, dementia and nursing care, features 62 ensuite bedrooms, and has been designed to enable residents to live active and ful lled lives, while also promoting independence. e care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
