Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment at Hampshire County Council, said: “The funding awarded from the Department for Transport (DfT) will be used to better understand the issues around reinstating the passenger railway and if appropriate undertake further assessment of the business case for the scheme. This will complement other work we are doing in developing a transport strategy for the Waterside, which is looking at improving bus, walking and cycling provision, alongside possible highway improvements Hampshire County Council’s Waterside Line proposal was one of 60 applications submitted to the Government, with ten being approved in the recent announcement. The next stage of the process is to assess the proposals to re-introduce passenger rail services to the existing freight only line between Totton and Fawley in more detail, in conjunction with the DfT and other key stakeholders”. Phil Dominey, Senior Regional Development Manager, South Western Railway, said: “We welcome the news that Hampshire’s bid is being taken forward. Alongside the reopening of the route, any business case will need to consider other elements such as rolling stock provision and alterations to track and signalling needed to accommodate services at Southampton.” Nick Farthing, Chair of the ree Rivers Community Rail Partnership, said: “This is exceptionally good news that the Government have granted approval for the next stage of work in the reopening of the Waterside Line (Totton-Hythe/Fawley) to passengers; I am so pleased to have been a part of this, working with other like-minded people to get this to the next stage, for this crucial piece of infrastructure to serve the Waterside.” Waterside Line Moves Forward With National Funding Award A new contract to ensure the County Council has access to divers as part of its work to maintain hundreds of bridges and structures in Hampshire will be put in place. Councillor Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Hampshire County Council and Executive Member for Economy, Transport and Environment, gave the go ahead for the new contract at his recent decision day. Councillor Humby said: “This shows the breadth and depth of the services the County Council provides. Having divers on hand when necessary is essential to enable Hampshire’s highway structures in and around watercourses to continue to be inspected and maintained, ensuring they are safe and fit for purpose, and keeping Hampshire moving. The appointment of a specialist diving firm will enable full inspection of areas of structures which are not accessible to engineers due to high water levels, fast flows or low headroom. The contract will also ensure that the County Council continues to have appropriate resources available to deal with debris and blockages in water courses during times of flood or storm to keep the highways clear.” Hampshire County Council has an annual programme of diver inspections on selected bridges and structures across the county. is covers 399 bridges/structures, 318 of which require a diver team and 81 of which are either con ned space or require the use of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV). A diving team accompanies County Council engineers on selected inspections and reports on the condition of elements which would not otherwise be accessible. Photographs and measurements are taken by the divers and recommended works recorded, identifying issues to be prioritised by the Hampshire County Council’s bridges team. e initial contract period will be for four years, commencing fromMay 2020 and ending on 30th April 2024. Subject to agreement between the parties, the contract may be extended by two periods of one-year duration each, giving a total maximum contract duration of six years.
