He dedicated much of his spare time to picking up litter in Marchwood and could be seen out and about in all weathers. John was known to many in the village as he would o en stop to chat when out litter picking. He cared very much about the environment and protecting it for his grandchildren. On hearing of his passing, many residents came together via social media to discuss ways to pay tribute to John. e rst was to raise funds to purchase an engraved memorial bench. Sue Kerrigan-Harris led the fundraising and over £1700 was raised. e bench is on order and will be placed near the new oak carving in Marchwood in the near future. e second idea was to complete a community litter pick in John’s honour, so on the 19th September, 82 Marchwood residents of all ages took part in a socially distanced litter pick in small groups all around the village. 63 bags of rubbish were collected on the day. Any money le over from the fundraiser will be used to purchase litter picking equipment for future community events.
