Firework Advice Firework night can be the worst time of the year for pets - although it’s never just one night, usually going on until the end of the year! If you have recently adopted, rehomed or become a dog owner for the rst time, it is essential that you keep your dog/pets inside. • Never let your dog out on their own in the garden o lead during the rework period, a terri ed dog can easily clear a 6-foot fence to escape the noise. • Make sure you provide a safe and snug place where there are no windows or doors like a wardrobe, toilet, cupboard and leave the door ajar for air and make sure they have water with them or very close by. A petri ed dog will try and jump through a window so keep them closed. • Leave the radio or TV on to try and drown out the noise, not too loudly as dogs can hear double the volume we can! • Do not overly fuss or comfort your dog, this only reinforces their fear, be around them by staying in the same room and stay very calm. Dogs have two responses when they are afraid, ght or ight. It is advisable to keep children that are in the house away from a petri ed dog as children tend to want to comfort them when they are distressed. My love of dogs nally got the better of me, which is why I decided to start up my business. Most people go to work to enable them to do the things they love. I simply wanted to make my work, the thing I love. I’ve always been around dogs, my rst memory was my Nan’s dog Katie, a Jack Russell cross miniature Poodle. en came along my own dog, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named Lizzie - My absolute best friend and a true little lady. We had the best days together and when she passed she le a hole in my heart. Now I’ve surrounded myself with other people’s best friends and they have become my pals too. I have such a bond, whether it’s ‘Digger Dotty’ the long hair Vizela or ‘Water Pup Vinnie’ or ‘Rudy Roo’ - e little lady of the pack, they all have a special place in my heart. Dogs make me smile and I can o er your pups the love and attention they deserve when you are not around. Based in the New Forest I o er bespoke professional dog walking and boarding, tailoring each walk to their requirements. All dogs will be mentally stimulated, socialised and have opportunities for training. I am fully insured, pet rst aid trained and DBS checked. We walk in all weathers, come rain, shine or snow! Collections and drop o times are not included in the dog walk; I believe the dog should get the full walk whether it’s a full hour or a 30 minute walk. If needed, a er each walk, I will wash, brush and towel dry your pooch before returning back home. I promise to give your pups the best experience, ensuring their happiness and wellbeing at all times. For an informal chat call me on 07496 597963. LOVE MY PAWS by Kim Willcocks As the microchipping of horses becomes compulsory in England this October, the RSPCA fears it will not be enough to prevent an impending horse welfare catastrophe during the Coronavirus pandemic. e RSPCA are braced for an in ux of sick and abandoned horses following the pandemic that will cripple resources, despite new microchipping law coming into force During the lockdown period of 23rd March to 8th September alone, the RSPCA dealt with 4,479 incidents involving horses. In 2019 the charity re-homed 242 horses, but almost 760 remain in the charity’s care to date, desperately needing new homes. e RSPCA is expecting more horses to be abandoned or neglected as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic and the deepening recession and is urging people who are looking to take on a horse to think about adopting one from the charity. AlthoughtheRSPCAwelcomesthechangeinthe lawtomakemicrochipping of all equines mandatory irrespective of age, as it is for dogs, it warns the move is not enough alone to tackle irresponsible breeders and owners at the heart of the equine crisis, which has now raged for eight years. At the same time, many animal welfare organisations have seen donations plummet during the pandemic, and there is already huge pressure on resources. Animal welfare charities received no speci c nancial help during lockdown and the RSPCA is calling on the government to give nancial support to the sector for its vital work during one of toughest years in RSPCA history. New legislation demanding compulsory microchipping of all horses irrespective of age is set to come into e ect in England at the End of October; currently around 70% of the horses they rescue are not microchipped. Under the current COVID-19 rehoming protocols anyone interested in fostering or adopting an animal from the RSPCA should check which animals are available nearby.
