DENT DYNAMICS PAINTLESS DE T REMOVAL Peking to Paris Motor Challenge – Pt. 2 550km drive on gravel and cross country. At a passage control a little girl gave me and Bill Gill (a likeable Aussie) driving a Mercedes 350 SLC, a sweet each and then a hug - It made me feel quite humble. On our way across the lovely countryside and through tiny villages and towns people turned out to wave us on and cheer. e Russian people are incredibly friendly, they even have a Peking to Paris Fan Club and local children ask for autographs in their special ‘car-spotting’ booklets! At last we arrived, high up in the mountains was a hotel ski resort called Aya – how lovely not to be under canvas! A team of Russian mechanics got to work on many of the cars as they arrived. My car was second in the queue and they welded my damaged exhaust. By the time we had taken the car back to the hotel it was 10pm, another long day. 13th June We le the comfy hotel with many people waving us o as we drove down the hotel drive. e beautiful Russian countryside continued, and I now understand the scale of Russia, it is rather like driving in British Columbia or the Yukon. Soon we are back on gravel, nothing compared to Mongolia but particularly deceptive. e gravel is smooth but out of nowhere are vast potholes, which at 100kph is hard to avoid. Another bizarre anomaly to stop him over heating! Arrived at our hotel in Novokuznetsk at 5pm where a fake nish line had been erected. In the low a ernoon sun, a loudspeaker was calling out the details of each car when it arrived. Peking to Paris is a massive event for the Russians who love to see old cars and they marvel at the extent of the journey. 14th June We decided not to follow the rally route today as we learned 28 more cars have failed or needed urgent repair. I am at the Mercedes dealership in Novosibirsk, and my car is on the inspection ramp. Despite the harsh treatment the car has endured, Reggie seems to be ok. e o side rear wheel and tyre wall has been damaged, so that will need changing but that’s about it. ere is a massive language barrier here, so I am hoping there is nothing being lost in translation! Tomorrow, thankfully, is a rest day so we will spend some time getting the car in the best shape possible. Next is Kazakhstan and I am under no illusion that we will have arduous roads ahead of us. ....To be continued in the next issue on 19th November. Continued from page 62 are the butterflies – there are millions of them, ying in dense swarms. e windshield and radiator grill were completely covered, and I had to regularly stop and ‘de-butter y’ Old Reggie e UK unemployment rate has risen to its highest level for two years, with o cial gures showing those aged 16 to 24 su ering the biggest drop in employment compared with other age groups.
