New Forest District Council (NFDC) Cabinet member, Cllr Michael Harris, has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for his voluntary work of 30 years with Comic Relief. Cllr Harris said, “I’ve known for several months and had to keep it a secret, even from my wife. I am incredibly proud, it’s really very special.” e honour means Cllr Harris is “‘obliged to carry the initials’ after my name, but so far it has only been emblazoned across some doughnuts as a congratulations gift from my son.” Cllr Harris became a trustee of Comic Relief in 1991, volunteering whilst also running his own nancial business. He was the treasurer for the charity for 30 years and in that time “looked a er” the £1.7 billion the charity raised. He chaired the nance and risk committee, investment committee, and the HR committee and so was involved with all the aspects to do with the nancial side of the charity headed by Richard Curtis. Cllr Harris said, “When I started it was a tiny organisation and we all just rallied around, and everyone mucked in.
