Following a two-year process, the Masterplan was approved by Test Valley Borough Council (TVBC) at a full Council meeting on 2nd September 2020 and has now been published on the Council’s website. Led by Shaun Andrews, Executive Director of Nexus Planning London, Nexus was rst instructed by Romsey Future and Test Valley Borough Council back in June 2018. Over the course of two years, Nexus worked closely with Perkins & Will Architects and other consultants to prepare the South of Romsey Town Centre Masterplan, forming a strong bond with Romsey Future members, Councillors, key Council O cers, the community and local businesses through the process. e process involved extensive public consultation, including participation in an innovative Citizens’ Assembly. rough the Masterplanning process, the consultancy’s team learnt about locals’ everyday lives, the challenges they face and the opportunities they identi ed. e outcome is a Masterplan that focuses on developing a ‘Resilient Romsey’ – vital in today’s uncertain times – and with Romsey’s community rmly at its core. e South of Romsey Town Centre Masterplan includes a new square and exible community space right at its heart, alongside new retail and dining space and a new mobility hub – all of which are just some of the plans for the area around the existing bus station, Cros eld Hall and Broadwater Road over the next ve to ten years. e Masterplan covers short, medium and long-term scenarios for the area and is exible to cater for uncertain times and tailored to market changes and future developer partners. Zena Foale-Banks, Principal Planner at Nexus London, comments: “ The Romsey Town Centre Masterplan is something we’re immensely proud of. After extensive public consultation over the past two years, the resulting Masterplan focuses on future resilience and really prioritises Romsey’s community and businesses. It puts health and wellbeing high on the agenda, with enhanced green, grey and blue infrastructure, improved connectivity, and high quality and inclusive design – all whilst ensuring the proposals are attractive to the market and deliverable. We’re looking forward to seeing it realised.” Graham Smith, Head of Planning Policy & Economic Development at Test Valley Borough Council, comments: “Romsey Future is a partnership of community organisations who shared a vision of improving an area of the town for both residents and visitors. Romsey Future, supported by TVBC, appointed Nexus and Perkins + Wills to bring forward the Masterplan. They were chosen because they had the technical expertise, a refreshing approach to joint working with partners and a clear understanding of how to deliver a resilient and achievable Masterplan. Their commitment to public participation and engagement has been one of the standout successes of the Masterplan. They played a crucial role in the Romsey Masterplan being chosen as one of three Government pilot citizen assemblies and being shortlisted for the National Planning Awards.” e South of Romsey Town Centre Masterplan has been shortlisted for multiple awards including the Planning Awards 2020 (Award for Stakeholder Engagement in Planning), and by e RTPI South East Awards for Planning Excellence. Winners will be announced next month. For more details on e South of Romsey Town Centre Masterplan, visit Romsey Future and Test Valley Borough Council.
