Born in Cork, Ireland to humble beginnings, eresa travelled to London as a young woman to work as a chambermaid, serving in several of the great metropolitan hotels. An ambitious and spirited soul, eresa soon progressed to manage a succession of high street shop franchises to considerable success. Marriage and children soon followed, with eresa busily juggling work and family commitments through the 1960’s and 1970’s whilst living in north London. With her family growing up, eresa’s ambition to start her own business still burned bright, and the opportunity to purchase a small care home on the south coast inspired a complete uproot and move to Dibden Purlieu in 1982. Ashdene House needed total refurbishment but eresa’s hard work and dedication supported by her devoted husband Fred led to a successful enterprise, the home soon gaining a reputation for the highest standards in personal care. the Care Quality Commission awarding the home the o cial rating of “Outstanding”; the highest possible award, and a rating that Badgers Holt proudly holds to this day. And yet, hugely successful as she was in business and in care, eresa was so much more… she was a force of nature, a truly special, magni cent woman who enriched the lives of everyone lucky enough to come to know her. And to know her truly was to love her - she had a unique charm and charisma, born no doubt of her Irish roots, (of which she was justly proud). eresa had a natural air of benevolent authority, she was the very de nition of a woman of substance – in business, and in life, she knew what she was about, completely. Unfailingly kind, deeply thoughtful, personally generous to a fault, (as many of the friends she quietly helped are so very aware), and yet possessed of a steely determination if she felt a situation required it, eresa was quite simply, one of kind. Her sudden and all too premature passing has le us, her family and her friends, utterly bere . She cannot be replaced. ere is a void in our lives now that we can only vainly attempt to ll with so many happy memories of a cherished Mum, a steadfast friend, a guiding light whom we shall never forget, and will forever carry in our hearts. God Bless you eresa… they say “grief is the price we pay for love”, well the pain we feel now is testimony that we certainly loved you, more than words can say. Ashdene became so renowned that when a few years later the opportunity arose for the development of a larger home in nearby Butts Ash, eresa took the plunge and acquired Badgers Holt, again applying her personal industry and expertise to establish the highest possible standards in care. When tragedy struck and eresa lost her beloved Fred to cancer, daughter Gina gave up her career with British Airways to come work alongside her mum; now decades later, with the magnificent support of Registered Manager Diane Younger and the dedicated sta team, the home continues to ourish. Celebrating thirty years at Badgers Holt in 2016, eresa crowned her life’s work and achievement the following year with Theresa Rayner
