He cared for his community around him and was always there for his many friends. He involved himself in local projects, including the Hythe and Dibden Woodland and Waterside Conservation Group, meeting once a month in the woods. “I’m o to the woods!” he would say. Projects included constructing and positioning bird boxes, lopping trees, cleaning the foreshore, and taking care of the health of streams and woodlands. He was, at various times Chairman or Treasurer. He was also a Trustee and Committee member of Hythe Sailing Club for many years, sharing his knowledge and expertise, giving a hand whenever he could. Brian will be greatly missed. We believe that Brian would prefer to leave most living things to grow. erefore we have asked for people to remember him by donating to Hythe and Dibden Woodland and Waterside Conservation Group. Or you might like to promote his work with the Group by volunteering, so that his work is continued. Here is some background to the work carried out by the group. ere are some lovely green spaces within Hythe that are a haven for plants and wildlife. In the Spring, swathes of bluebells carpet Tate’s Copse. Pipistrelle bats, Tawny owls, Sparrow hawks and a whole host of our native birds use these woodlands. ere is a stream that runs from Dibden, the path next to it, goes through Furzey Holt wood into wetland at Tate’s Copse, owing through the reed beds before emptying into Southampton Water. Here, you may see Egrets and the occasional King sher. e new path created through Furzey Piece, Rosebery Plantation and ButtsashWood, is an undulating walk, anked by Scots Pines and one great view out onto Southampton Water and Netley Abbey beyond. Along Shore Road is the Picnic Area and the Foreshore. e stream, footpaths and woodland all have to be maintained as nature is brilliant at claiming it back as quickly as it can. e Hythe and Dibden Woodland and Waterside Group have been looking a er this area for the past 23 years. We have nearly eradicated the infestation of Himalayan Balsam that threatened to overrun the wet woodland, created new paths, built bridges and covered a whole host of other conservation work in the area. Brian Boniface has played a major role in the group for the last 14 years. We were thinking of a tting tribute to Brian, most of the streams throughout the forest are named but the one we have been tending and looking a er is nameless. Even if we cannot get o cial recognition, we would like to propose that any local map should now be marked Boniface Brook to recognise the outstanding dedication and commitment of our dearly departed friend. If you are interested in conservation and would like more information please contact Ian Cottrell: iancottrell@talktalk.net Wheeled bins and weekly food waste collections are two of the changes included in the preferred option being recommended for further work towards a new waste service for the district. e changes could also include a wider range of materials being collected for recycling, such as plastic pots, tubs and trays. Cllr Alison Hoare, portfolio holder for environment, said of the dra waste strategy, “Wheelie bins are part of a wider approach being considered so we can meet a legal requirement to offer food waste collections, and increase our recycling rate. “We know that roughly 90% of all local authorities in England now collect waste in wheeled bins and we can learn a lot from the work they have already done. A project team have been looking at what sort of waste and recycling system would be best for the area for nearly two years, including looking at systems already known to work well, along with the public feedback from our survey in January 2020. “There’s a lot of work still to do to get this right, including asking our residents for comments on what we plan, and making sure there is somewhere appropriate to send the food waste for recycling. Any changes won’t come in until 2022 at the earliest. “We are keen to hear from residents so we can take their views into consideration as we look at how a new system could work. But waste minimisation sits at the heart of all of this and there is no question that change must happen.” If Cabinet approve the recommendation, o cers will do more work to assess what exact system would be the best solution for the New Forest and the dra waste strategy is open now until 10th December 2020.
