The ‘Great Solent Birdwatch’ was participated by lots of people and it aimed to connect communities with their coastline through birdwatching. In total an impressive 58 different species of birds were spotted, including kingfisher and a short-eared owl. Over nine and a half thousand birds were recorded throughout the region by people young and old, whilst observing social-distancing restrictions. Birds Flock to the Solent Short-eared Owl pictured above Jess, age eight, was at Broadmarsh in Havant and she remarked on her watch, "My favourite bird is a lapwing, we saw lots of different of birds today". e initiative, organised by Bird Aware Solent for the second year, was participated in places such as Newtown in the Isle of Wight, Hill Head near Fareham, Keyhaven in the New Forest and Farlington Marshes in Portsmouth. It has helped local communities to spot amazing birds such as curlew, avocet and oystercatcher in their natural surroundings. Councillor Seán Woodward, the Chairman of the Partnership for South Hampshire (PfSH), a body that oversees Bird Aware, commented: “The Solent is a special place and the birds that migrate here every year play a big part in that. If you visit the coast this winter please keep an eye out for the birds and take care not to disturb them”. Bird Aware Solent is a local partnership of conservation groups and Solent councils that aims to reduce disturbance to coastal birds. e ‘Great Solent Birdwatch’ will be back in 2021 so keep an eye on the Bird Aware Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages.
