Calshot Sailing Club is a family friendly club, catering for all skill levels, from beginners through to expert sailors, giving their members the opportunity to sail on one of the most diverse and challenging stretches of water in the United Kingdom. Located a few hundred yards along Calshot Spit from the lifeboat station, there has been a strong bond between the organisations over the 40 years that Calshot Sailing Club has been in existence. e treasurer of Calshot Sailing Club, Keith Fisher said: “We know how hard it has been this year for the RNLI to raise money. Our members spend a lot of time on the water around Calshot and knowing that the team is here if we need them is a great comfort to us”. Rear Commodore of Calshot Sailing Club, David Poupard added: “As a former member of the crew at Calshot RNLI, I fully appreciate all of the hard work that they do for the community and we are delighted to be able make this donation.” Calshot RNLI Acting Lifeboat Operations Manager, MarkWeatherhead responded: “Throughout the course of the year, we run a number of activities that include Brew with the Crew, Bands in the Boatshed and our annual Raft Race. These events are the lifeblood of our fundraising efforts and in our 50th Anniversary Year, due to COVID-19, we’ve been unable to run them. We are incredibly grateful to Calshot Sailing Club for their generosity in these challenging times.” Calshot RNLI Receive £250 Donation From Local Sailing Club Rear Commodore of Calshot Sailing Club David Poupard presents cheque to Mark Weatherhead Great Support From Local Community COVID-19 restrictions did not stop Hythe & Waterside Rotary from carrying out their annual Christmas supermarket collections again this year. A total of £648.87 was collected over 3 days and Hythe & Waterside Rotary would like to thank local shoppers for their generous support once again. Organiser Rotarian John Samuels said: “ I would like to thank all those Rotarians who helped with the collections under difficult circumstances as well as the Co-op staff and customers who made us so welcome”. Money raised by Hythe & Waterside Rotary is used to support local good causes as well as national and International projects. There are many conflicts around the world which have caused huge numbers of people to be made homeless. Natural disasters have also been increasing, the Typhoon Season is in full swing and in the Philippines, for example, there have been three catastrophic Typhoons in the last months, and more could strike at any moment. All this has a terrible impact and destroys many people’s homes and lives. Rotary groups across the country have been working with a charity called Shelterbox to provide emergency shelter and tools for families robbed of their homes and possessions anywhere in the world. e Shelterbox Charity was conceived by a Rotarian in Cornwall. He appreciated that losing a house and possessions as a result of manmade or natural disaster situations is incredibly stressful and makes it di cult for people to rebuild their lives. He realised that recovery would be aided if equipment was available to repair or replace accommodation. e rst distribution of 143 ShelterBoxes was sent to victims of the 2001 Gujarat earthquake and the Charity has grown substantially since then. e equipment in a Shelterbox is carefully tailored to suit the type of disaster and the geographical area involved. Boxes are held ready to go in depots so that relief can be rapidly deployed. Local Rotary Clubs are very involved in distribution. Contents will vary but the average cost of each box is £590. e charity is based in Truro, Cornwall UK and funds are continually needed in order to build up a stock of Shelterboxes in the depots round the world. ere is currently a shortage of boxes, particularly in the Philippines, and so Hythe and Waterside Rotary Club has recently donated the cost of two boxes. If you would like to help fund more boxes you can donate to Hythe and Waterside Rotary Club ref.
