Titled ‘Heathland’, it is the 9th book in the ‘British Wildlife Collection’ series and was published on 4th March 2021 by Bloomsbury. Clive has lived in the New Forest for over 30 years and has been greatly inspired by its heathland habitats and landscapes. As a professional nature conservationist Clive has contributed to the protection of the New Forest through his work with the Nature Conservancy Council and Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. In a voluntary capacity Clive has been the Chairman of the New Forest National Park Authority and is a highly active member of the New Forest Association (Friends of e New Forest). His interest in the wildlife, management and cultural history of heathlands extends far beyond the New Forest deeply embedded in Britain’s cultural heritage and how they support ecosystems of great complexity and delight. Clive explores the wildlife of heathland and its relationship with the people who manage it; he presents a landscape that would have been familiar to our forebears and which is still a vital part of our rural economy. e book is an intriguing story of struggle, co-operation and competition and a unique celebration of British heathlands, past and present. In his foreword to the book, botanist Andrew By eld says: “In Clive, we have an ever-fascinating guide to Britain’s heathery districts, not only marvelling at the wildlife of such places, but also celebrating their diverse origins, uses and cultural resonances”. Copies of ‘Heathland’ can be obtained from the Natural History Book Service (at the special price of £29.99 until 30th April 2021 instead of the full price of £34.99) at: www.nhbs.com , via email: customerservices@nhbs. com or telephone: 01803 865913. Local author and naturalist, Clive Chatters and his research for the ‘Heathland’ book took him to many parts of England, Wales, and Scotland. In the book Clive explains how heathlands were once commonplace in our countryside, how they are VIRTUALLY DOWN ON THE FARM Local children who have desperately missed visiting Longdown Activity Farm during the lockdown have been offered online access to a whole farmyard full of farm-themed fun and educational experiences by joining the Longdown Little Farmers Club. Longdown Little Farmers can meet their favourite animals once again in a series of charming videos, professionally produced and featuring Longdown Activity Farm owner, Farmer Bryan, talking about a di erent farm animal in each 10-minute long lm. Every video is accompanied by a fact- lled set of downloadable fun sheets about the featured animal. In addition, Little Farmers can enjoy exclusive access to a whole host of exciting news, video events like blacksmith visits and births of baby animals, and downloadable fun sheets to enjoy and learn from. Each Longdown Little Farmer is given their own certi cate years, I have witnessed many incredible examples of the joy that contact with animals can bring to our visitors - especially those visitors that, for all manner of reasons, have been denied contact previously. My wish is to keep sharing those experiences with more families and schools and we can do this whether the farm is open or not through our online Longdown Little Farmers Club. Our members can still feel involved with regular farming updates and learn all about animal behaviour and care by watching our videos.” He continues: “Hopefully, parents and teachers will see the benefits of the Longdown Little Farmers Club and join us for the small sum of £10.00 per year. With regular updates and educational videos complete with activity sheets, the club offers excellent value for money, and every membership fee will help us to fund the feeding of the animals throughout the year.” For more information or to join the club, visit: www.longdownfarm.co.uk/product/longdown- little-farmers-club or call: 023 8029 2837 or emai l: enquiries@longdownfarm.co.uk to hang on their barn door at home. Longdown Activity Farm has been closed for much of the lockdown, so access to the farm for school groups and families has been severely curtailed for both educational and leisure purposes. Owner of Longdown Activity Farm, Bryan Pass, explains : “It is always our aim to bring children and animals together in a safe, educational environment.
