Symptoms include extreme pain, heavy bleeding, and excessive bloating amongst other things. Despite the first diagnosis being in 1860 there is still no cure. Jodie Hughes, Founder and CEO of the charity, will be walking from University Hospital Southampton (Princess Anne) to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth before making her way to Gunwharf Quays, Portsmouth. Due to COVID-19 restrictions Jodie will be making the trek alone, however other individuals will be doing their part for the charity by joining ‘virtually’ or taking part in their own fundraising walks and events. Endometriosis (commonly referred to as ‘Endo’) a ects 1 in 10 individuals that were born female, which equates to approximately 176 million individuals worldwide. Incidence rates in those su ering with infertility jump up to 50%whilst endometriosis in young people and adolescents is rarely suspected and o en ill diagnosed. As many as 46% of su erers see upward of five primary service doctors before gaining a referral to a specialist and being correctly diagnosed - the current average, global waiting time is 7 years! Endometriosis impacts every aspect of a patient’s life too - 40% state they are unemployed or have been made so because of the disease. e primary aim of the march is to raise awareness of this debilitating gynaecological disease; one that leaves su erers in daily agony but is rarely spoken about. is needs to change.
