Group litter picks have been curtailed due to current regulations. e advice from Keep Britain Tidy (in line with Government regulations) is we can still litter pick individually or in our bubble as part of daily exercise close to where we live. Some litter pickers are letting others know where they might be so both sides of a road could be done with social distancing. If this is in the same neighbourhood close to where you live it allows for some interaction with social distancing. Want to get picking? Cheapest litter pick kit is a small plastic bag and a clothes peg which will t in any pocket. Take a pair of gardening gloves/alternative, preferably waterproof for picking up cans, small bottles and can be washed a erwards. is is also suitable for walkers and runners, it’s now called plogging (look it up on google!) and dog walkers. Do you need a picking stick? - e New Forest National Park is giving litter pickers, Hi Vis, and bags away. Visit: www.newforestnpa.gov.uk/communities/ get-involved/litter-picking or call: 01590 646600. If you are buying one yourself NFDC recommend Helping Hands Environmental: www. hhenvironmental.co.uk . ey even make shorter ones for children so litter picking can be a family a air. Do’s and Don’ts • When you go out by yourself always carry a mobile phone and tell someone else where you are going and what time you will be back. • Never pick up any, a) sharps, b) heavy items, c) animal dead bodies or d) faeces (the latter only if you are a dog owner, BUT if using a plastic bag always bin it, don’t leave it!) Incidents of animals swallowing litter and dying are VERY real. Litter kills not only cattle, ponies, and birds but many of our smaller mammals who get into bottles, cans, bags etc. • If you nd a, b, or c you must notify New Forest District Council (same applies if you come across y tipping). • ere is a handy app you can now download ‘New Forest in Touch’. Find it on google & apple stores otherwise use the relevant form on the website: www. newforest.gov.uk • Always be safe when litter picking - advice from the District and other organisations/litter charities is not to litter pick on 40 mph+ roads/verges. Let the District Council know if you see a problem.
