Dogs give us lots of signals all the time to convey how they feel, and they use their entire body to do this. ey also use calming signals which are appeasement signals to let us know how they feel about something because dogs experience basic emotions just like we do. One of themost important aspects of having a dog is understanding their communication. So many problems are easily avoided when you can con dently recognize the many signs and signals your dog gives you to express how they feel. Branch Manager, Zoe Stratton said: “ home schooling was hard work at the best of times, but it was made even harder without have access to a printer. We were more than happy to help out by printing off any school work for free.” The branch has seen an overwhelming response from the local community: “ We’ve been inundated with so many lovely words. The parents were so grateful for such a simple gesture that has helped them so much.” Keeping safety at the forefront of everyone’s minds Zoe continues: We would only accept emailed documents, then sanitise our hands and put the printing in an envelope for the parents to take away. I hope this small gesture encourages everyone to be kinder and hopefully we made a difficult time for families a little bit easier”. Feeding ponies causes serious issues in the New Forest and is against byelaws. Some ponies and donkeys develop an unhealthy craving for human food and become aggressive with people who, quite rightly, try to keep their picnics to themselves. e animals also tend to gather near roads, looking for people with food, and this makes them more vulnerable to tra c accidents. Human food can give ponies a bad stomach ache, which is very painful. Even stroking ponies can be dangerous. ey may look friendly but they are unpredictable and can bite and kick, especially mares with foals. A range of methods is undertaken to reduce the feeding and petting of the animals: • Behaviour change campaigns online and on-the-ground, run by the New Forest National Park Authority and the Commoners Defence Association • Face to face discussion with people who are feeding the animals, or at places where problems have occurred in the past • Replacing ine ective permanent signs with temporary, eye-catching ‘look don’t touch’ signs and posters at speci c locations where people and animals might come into con ict • Lea ets, including a folding fortune-teller- like ‘ ick- ack’– great for schools, families and at events • Pony-proof litter bins carrying the message that ‘Your food and litter could harm the ponies and donkeys. Please take yours home if this bin is full.’
