Ministers have agreed to speed up delivery so that work could start as early as this summer – pending nal approvals – on the bridges, which approximately 60,000 vehicles use every day and serve as a crucial link between the New Forest Waterside Area and Southampton. By doing so, it is hoped that more disruptive safety works which would otherwise have been needed in the future, including regular lane closures, can be avoided. e bridges also provide access for local businesses and hauliers to the Port of Southampton, helping support local economies in the region, while providing pedestrians and cyclists with the only direct route to cross the River Test for many miles. Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said: “I’m delighted to announce this funding package which will ensure thousands of local people and businesses can continue to travel easily and safely between the New Forest and Southampton every day. We’re committed to levelling up transport infrastructure all over the country – providing safe and reliable travel for everyone wherever they live and making sure people have access to opportunities and jobs in their region.” A er years of use, work is needed to repair damaged concrete on the bridges and to improve the stability work will ensure journeys remain safe and reliable for tens of thousands of road users in the area every day and safeguard important routes for greener travel. Without acting now, more signi cant works will be needed in the future which would cause greater disruption and delay for motorists. e Department for Transport are funding the majority of the £15.8m scheme, which is being led by Hampshire County Council, who are contributing £2.4m. e funding is the latest boost for transport infrastructure in the region, following £56m made available to Portsmouth and Hampshire Councils from the Government’s Transforming Cities Fund. of the structures. e proposed maintenance e reopening of Lyndhurst Library as an independent community library is one step closer following a £10,000 grant award to Lyndhurst Community Centre, which County Council Executive Member for Commercial Strategy, Human Resources and Performance, Councillor Stephen Reid, approved at his recent decision day. Councillor Reid said: “The County Council is incredibly pleased to be able to offer Lyndhurst Community Centre a one-off grant of £10,000 to help fund the start-up and transition costs for Lyndhurst’s independent community library. Lyndhurst Community Centre will be providing a valued service to the local community and the County Council wishes them the greatest success as their plans for the independent community library move forward.” Lyndhurst Community Centre Chair of Trustees, Rob Dewing, said: “Our new library will be part of a bigger project that will also create a new high-tech conference room and a permanent office for Lyndhurst Parish Council. Lyndhurst Community Centre is grateful to Hampshire County Council for its contribution towards the costs of opening the new library. We are also grateful to Lyndhurst Parish Council, with whom we are working in close partnership to deliver these new facilities for the Lyndhurst community.” In addition to the one-o £10,000 grant, Hampshire County Council is providing the following support to Lyndhurst Community Centre for the independent community library: • Access to the Library Service Group Membership Scheme to refresh their physical stock and reserve speci c titles from the Hampshire Library collection, including Ready Reads if collected on behalf of a Hampshire Library customer. • Advice from County Council o cers for up to one year to support the transition of library functions and property handover.
