Over the next fewmonths, I will be writing up the stories of some of the people buried within the churchyard, many with living relatives who have so kindly contributed to these short histories. ALFRED CHARLES COSSOR (jnr.) Alfred Charles Cossor junior was born in 1862 in Islington, London, the eldest son of Alfred Charles Cossor who had founded a British company famous for the manufacture of glass scienti c instruments. is was based in Clerkenwell, London. Alfred Junior joined his father’s company when he was fourteen years old. His younger brother Frank continued in the original family business until his death, but the company still exists as Accoson, in America. In 1892 Alfred (jnr.) married Alice Parker who was from Exbury. ey produced one daughter, Aileen, who was born in Islington, London, in December 1903. Sadly, she died of an epileptic convulsion, at the age of three, when they were living at Fawley Cottage, in Fawley. Alfred (jnr) was a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. Around 1896, while still working in his father’s company, he made the rst x-ray tubes manufactured in Great Britain. He was a pioneer of the industry. In 1908 he le his father’s company and set up his own electronics company. e company designed and manufactured many electronic components and domestic products such as radio sets, thermionic valves, television sets, cathode ray oscilloscopes. In 1918 at the end of WW1 the company moved to Highbury in London and named the o ce building ‘Cossor House’. e building is still there, but is now home to e London Screen Academy. He remained Chairman of the company until he died in May 1922, but the company continued and prospered in the eld of electronics. In 1935 a Cossor cathode ray tube was used in experimental radar research, and one year later the company sold its rst television receiver. It was at Cossor, in 1937, that the world’s rst radar air defence system was built, in conjunction with EMI and PYE, and the company continued to develop and produce cutting edge electronics throughout World War Two. e IFF (Identi cation Friend or Foe) radar system was used in the Battle of Britain. It was here that the spy Arthur Wynn* was working, in the development team for the production of airborne IFF By 1956 Cossor withdrew from valve and CRT manufacture to concentrate on radar detection systems. ey were able to detect ight operations, 400 miles away, of individual ghter planes within Eastern Europe and deliver the information to NATO stations along the Iron Curtain borders. Cossor sold its television and radio business to Philips in 1958 and moved the company to Harlow in Essex. Two years later they were involved in missile guidance and ground support equipment, but due to trading losses they sold the company to Raytheon. However, Alfred Charles was a very dynamic person, and when he moved into Fawley Cottage aged 41, which his grandparents eventually bought from the eighth Baron Walsingham, he became involved in the local community. He became a Church Warden for All Saints Church, Fawley, and was largely instrumental in the restoration of the interior of the church. is turned out to be an incredibly stressful role. On his death he le a fund for ’the maintenance of the church’. A er joining the Parish Council around 1912 he became the Chairman within one year, and he remained in this post until his death. With his usual dynamism, he became involved in the day to day concerns of the Parish, and was instrumental in separating the Parish of Fawley, making it independent from that of Hythe. He then turned his energies into persuading the County Council to repair the old Roman Road which would have considerably reduced the travel time from Fawley to Totton. e A326 was not built at this time, so the route consisted of winding roads through the various villages. Alfred then became involved in the restoration of the Old radar. In 1945 Cossor was heavily involved in the development of radar for air tra c control. In ‘Flight magazine’ in 1954, there was an advertisement for Cossor radar. The Cossor family memorial, dedicated to Aileen, Alice, and Alfred Continued on page 25
