In some cases, they will increase their stake in an investment, whether that be a share or a business or another kind of investment. As long as it is a ordable, they believe in the investment and can see a medium to long term future in the asset and forms part of their nancial future. Serious investors will commit at a time of turbulence for the markets. Warren Bu ett, the Oracle of Omaha, one of the most successful investors in the world once said, when asked about the favoured holding period for an investment he believed in was “forever”. He quite famously looks for buying opportunities when the markets are falling, or some companies are out of favour. Our own investment beliefs at Oyster are similar in some ways. We do not get involved in advising on individual stock purchases, but we do entrust investment partners to build well structured, diversi ed and risk adjusted portfolios that can deliver for clients over the short, medium, and long term. is time last year the world’s stock markets were falling very quickly. e FTSE 100 fell by around 40%. Our client’s portfolios receded in value by around 10-15%. Each only lasted for a couple of months and very quickly bounced back. Our portfolios bene tted from huge diversi cation thus reducing the short-term losses compared to the much less diversi ed FTSE 100. Looking back today that short term ‘V’ for some would have been painful as they panicked and changed their investments. For the well advised they at least held rm or invested more.
