But if that is not possible, Highways England recommends the following: Go left • Put your le indicator on and move into an emergency area, onto a hard shoulder, motorway service area, le -hand verge or A-road lay- by • Switch your hazard warning lights on, even during the day. If it’s dark, use side lights and in poor visibility use fog lights as well • On a motorway without a hard shoulder, it should be possible for most vehicles experiencing a problem to reach an emergency area. ese are regularly spaced and are marked by a clearly visible orange road surface and blue signs featuring an orange SOS telephone symbol Get safe • If it is safe to do so, and you can get out with any passengers, exit your vehicle on the side furthest from tra c. If it is not safe to do so, stay in your vehicle and wait for help • Keep well away from moving tra c and your own vehicle. Get behind a safety barrier where there is one, and where it is safe to do so. If you’re on a verge, be aware of any unseen hazards such as uneven ground or debris Get help • Contact Highways England on: 0300 123 5000 and then a breakdown recovery provider • If you are unable to exit your vehicle and get to a safe place, have stopped in a live tra c lane or feel your life is in danger, stay in your vehicle with your seatbelts and hazard lights on and call 999 immediately Highways England’s customer contact centre has people on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to help. For advice about what to do in a breakdown visit: www.highwaysengland. co.uk/breakdowns GO LEFT CAMPAIGN Advice from Highways England Autism Hampshire and Brendoncare’s Work to Reduce Isolation Gets Funding Boost Hampshire County Council’s Executive Member for Adult Social Care and Health, Councillor Liz Fairhurst has awarded a total of £60,000 in grant funding to two organisations in the county that help reduce loneliness and promote independence. Councillor Fairhurst said: “I am delighted that Brendoncare and Autism Hampshire will benefit from grants that will help work in their respective fields. Autism Hampshire play a huge role in supporting people by delivering high quality services that meet the diverse needs of those on the autism spectrum, while the money for Brendoncare’s clubs will help older people harness digital technology so they can take part in more activities, which is especially important at this time of national restrictions.” e grants awarded at Councillor Fairhurst’s Decision Day comprise: • £50,000 to Autism Hampshire awarded over one year – to help with their work providing services to people on the autistic spectrum through advice, guidance and support that is tailored for each person to maximise independence. The grant will also help Autism Hampshire to reduce isolation for those on the spectrum and help them continue to o er telephone support to families. As well as this, the organisation will be able to continue o ering community activity taster sessions, helping those with autism to build their con dence in attending at a pace that suits the individual. • £10,000 to Brendoncare awarded over one year - the grant will contribute to Brendoncare’s club for communities within Fareham and Gosport to improve digital participation to help people feel con dent about using a range of tailored online groups and classes, thereby reducing social isolation and loneliness. e grants awarded by Councillor Fairhurst formpart of awider programme of Local Authority social care grant funding designed to assist individuals to remain independent within their communities, minimising their need for social care. ey are designed to enhance the vital role played by local voluntary and community organisations who are o en best placed to support people at a local level. PASS A PUZZLE ‘Pass a Puzzle...Totton’ was founded by Rissy Perkin with the idea of sharing puzzles between a few friends over lockdown. It has now grown into a puzzle lending library with over 200 members in Totton and surrounding area, which is managed by Sue Savage and Kelly Rice. Sue manages the 1,000 piece puzzles and Kelly the 500. There are no membership or borrowing fees. e club survives on donations of puzzles from members and they have hundreds of puzzles to choose from. ey have also had brand new puzzles supplied from various companies which they have contacted about the group, this has been exciting! Members choose the puzzles they would like and they are collected weekly. In line with COVID-19 restrictions, there is hand gel supplied and collection boxes are placed outside. e club has turned into a great support for a lot of people who are isolating. Puzzling itself is a great hobby for calming the mind and, of course, passing the time, two things that have proven to be invaluable this year! ey always welcome new members and donations.
