Following emails and messages on social media the red bench was removed and has been replaced with one more ‘in keeping’ with the village. Deputy Clerk Sue Markides said : “It was interesting to learn from one local resident that in 1951, his grandmother arranged and paid for the first bench installed there, and another on the green at Ashlett Creek. As a senior member of Fawley W.I., she had been involved with a wartime scheme to provide extra food for isolated rural dwellers. When the scheme was wound up after the war, the remaining money was to be spent on improvements to local communities. She petitioned Fawley Parish Council to install a bench, so that mothers and children waiting for the bus could rest while they waited.” Cllr Alvey added: “Jason Mansbridge and his team of Ground Staff have positioned this bench 1.5 meters from the original position making it further away from a newly installed road light. The seat has been positioned perpendicular to the oak tree with safety (the tree gives potential protection from vehicles on the main road), shade and ease of access (closer to the path for members of the public that may struggle on slippery or uneven ground) in mind. I hope the bench will be enjoyed for many a year by the residents of Fawley.” Jason Mansbridge, Grounds Manager Fawley Parish Council and District Councillor Alan Alvey A er a year of cancelled events the organisers of the annual ‘Fawley Show’ are delighted to announce the event will now be held on Saturday 28th August 2021. With classic cars, live music, food, drink and more this event is FREE for all the family. Just bring yourselves and the sunshine from 10am. More details to follow but pencil this date in your diary! The (Fawley) Show Must Go On!
