Getting an early glimpse was not easy as not only was it behind the closed gates of the pier, but it was promptly shrink-wrapped to protect the gleaming new paintwork during the application of the new roof. Once the pier re-opened, visitors could admire the impressive workmanship. e carriage, which had been in the workshop since 2017, has had replacement side frames made from Iroko, skinned with marine grade ply. All windows have been replaced, as has the internal lighting with period ttings. e interior walls and original seating have been re-varnished. e exterior of the carriage has been painted Moss Green. e restoration under the management of HPHA Director Tina Brown, has been carried out by volunteers of the Shed (at the Pier) with support from Blue Funnel Ferries’ engineers. ere is still more work to be done, but HPHA, which e 22nd April saw Hythe Ferry li ed from the waves for its annual re t at Wight’s Shipyard on the Isle of Wight. All being well the Ferry will be t to take to the sea again by June. e crowdfunding, along with the council money, has Hythe Ferry gets its Long-Awaited Re-Fit signi cantly helped them take this step forward - Still lots of major jobs to do, but a very promising start! Fundraising for the Ferry is continuing in several ways including the sale of the ever-popular children’s book by Local Author Simon Chadwick ‘A Seal Swam in From the Sea’, Plant sales at Sandra’s Florist in Holbury and a Charity Golf Day is scheduled for Sunday 30th May .
