The spectacles donated to Romsey & Waterside Lions Club will go on a long journey. It began in 1967 when Chichester Lions sent 700 pairs of sorted specs to the Missionary Optical Society in Devon for use in their clinics in Kenya and India. Since then the project has expanded enormously with many Lions Club participating including Romsey & Waterside Lions. e spectacles that they collect from many sources including chemists, GP surgeries, individuals and the Herald are packed into boxes and delivered to Chichester Lions who sort the good from the broken, the sunglasses and any usable single lenses. Broken metal frames are sold for scrap as they cannot be mended. In 1985 Chichester Lions linked up with the Le Havre 300,000 pairs of spectacles to Medico France providing more than 50% of the spectacles processed by Medico France - more than any other national group including France itself. The Herald office in Hythe is currently assisting as a collection point for unwanted spectacles to be dropped off by the public along the Waterside area. Lions and Medico France and over the following ve years some 100,000 specs, 43,000 lenses, and 10,000 frames were sent to Medico France while still delivering to the Missionary Optical Society as many pairs of sorted specs as they needed. Once processed, they went to places such as Cameroon, Senegal, Ivory Coast, Sri Lanka, India, and Zanzibar. Today spectacles continue to be processed and sorted by Chichester Club members and volunteers in their specialist workshop in preparation for onward transmission to Medico France in Le Havre where the necessary equipment is used to clean and grade the spectacles ready for use in eye camps in Africa, India and Eastern Europe. Nearly all Lions Clubs in the UK are helping towards restoring sight in the poorer countries in the world along with Lions Clubs in over 200 other countries.
