Research has thrown up some previously unknown facts, making for some interesting reading. e book also includes some rare and previously unpublished photographs. Alan says that whilst his book includes historic information and some basic engineering details, it highlights how for almost 100 years it has played an important role in the life of Hythe and the Waterside. In an appeal in the Herald in April 2020 in preparation for his book, Alan asked for personal anecdotes and reminiscences of the train with responses that have been included in a special chapter coming in from as far away as Australia. It seems that no matter how far former Hythe residents nd themselves, they cannot leave our quirky little green train behind. ere is another chapter about some of the many men and one woman who have driven the train over the years. e book will be priced at £9.95 and is available for pre-ordering from Alan by email at: awt1950@sky.com or via Alan Titheridge on Facebook Messenger. It will also be available from the Herald o ce. Having fallen victim to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Hythe Pier Heritage Association (HPHA) can reveal that its ‘Rock the Pier’ music festival will return to the Hythe and Waterside social calendar in 2021. Subject to any further enforced restrictions, the popular event will take place on Saturday 11th September . All the performers booked for last year’s aborted event have been rebooked, including the Trav Cats, Soulcatchers, and the One-O s. In ne sunny weather, Rock the Pier was rst staged in August 2018, raising more than £5000. A grander and more spectacular event followed in July 2019, again with the sun shining from a clear blue sky, adding a further £7,000 towards HPHA’s funding of its plans to restore Hythe’s Victorian pier and its iconic railway. Further details of this year’s event will be released throughout the summer. ROCK THE PIER 2021 Revellers in front of the main stage 2019. Photo by Alan Titheridge
