Cancer support charity, Wessex Cancer Trust, is welcoming back clients for face-to-face care, as lockdown measures continue to ease. Currently clients are being welcomed back to the charity’s four cancer support centres for pre-booked counselling and befriending appointments. COVID- safe measures are in place and visits are limited to one household at a time. Wessex Cancer Trust’s Head of Services, Colette Cowan, says: “When the first lockdown was announced, people really needed our support and we quickly introduced a range of remote support services. These have been popular and we’ll be keeping them available for clients who may find it more difficult to get into a support centre. Slimming World have many members with pre-diabetes, type 1 and type 2 diabetes losing weight very successfully while following Food Optimising. For many people with diabetes, weight management can play a key role in helping to manage blood glucose levels. “Losing just 10% of your body weight can stave off full-blown type 2 diabetes if you’ve already been diagnosed with insulin resistance or pre-diabetes”, says Douglas Twenefour, Clinical Advisor for Diabetes UK . “Every kilogram (2.2lbs) of weight you lose reduces your risk of developing diabetes by 16%” he adds. “If you have already had a type 2 diagnosis, losing weight is the single most important lifestyle change you can make, especially if you’ve been recently diagnosed. It can delay both the need to take medication, and the rate at which the condition progresses.” A local member told same. It really reaffirms the value of the community that clients, volunteers and staff create there. New clients have also been keen to visit our centres to meet Phil, our wellbeing coordinator, and chat about what support they need. We’re encouraging all our staff and volunteers to have their COVID- 19 vaccinations as soon as they’re offered it and we have rigorous hygiene procedures in place. We want everyone who visits to feel reassured that it’s safe to do so.” Wendy White, the Manager of the charity’s Waterside Support Centre explains what being back in the centre means to her: “Our befrienders are beginning to see pre-booked clients and it’s been wonderful to welcome people back into the Centre. We will open Monday to Thursday from 10.00 - 2.00 - only for pre-booked appointments for the time being. Our team is really looking forward to opening up, and of course we will be working with restrictions in place to ensure safe visiting.” For more detail on the support available, including remote support, please get in touch with one of their Support Centres: www.wessexcancer.org.uk/ support-services/support-centres Finally face-to-face again, welcoming clients back to the centre Slimming World that he’d known for a while that he needed to lose weight but being told he was pre- diabetic was a big shock.
