Over the next fewmonths, I will be writing up the stories of some of the people buried within the churchyard, many with living relatives who have so kindly contributed to these short histories. VICE ADMIRAL FRANCIS PARRY R.N. On the south side of All Saints Church, Fawley, next to the gravel path, sits a handsome chest tomb dedicated to Vice-Admiral Francis Parry, his wife and two of his daughters. Francis, born in 1740 in Portsmouth, was the youngest child born to Captain Francis Parry and his wife, Ann Venables. At the age of 10, in 1750, he joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman, remained at that rank for 8 years, serving most of it in the Seven Years War in North America, when Britain and France were ghting for dominance of North American territory. He witnessed the siege of Louisbourg when many British settlers were massacred and tortured by the American Indian tribes. He also witnessed the capture of the French 74 gun ship ‘Raisonnable’, and the loss of H.M.S. Invincible in Spithead. Monarque. e sentence passed against the Vice Admiral was for failing ‘to do his utmost’ to defend the island of Minorca in the Mediterranean, against the French. On 7th February 1758 he passed his examination for lieutenant and was sent to join the 90 gun ship of the line HMS Namur, in the Gulf of Cadiz, once again ghting the French, all being part of the Seven Years War. In the ensuing years he served on a series of ships, gradually climbing the promotional ladder, and seeing service in the Bay of Biscay, Basque roads, the Mediterranean and being involved against Barbary and Algerine pirates. At the age of 31 he married Fanny (Frances) Eames in Alverstoke church, near Gosport, Hampshire. She was the niece of the M.P. for Newport, Isle of White. ey set up home in London. Francis then joined HMS Preston, which sailed to Boston shortly a er ‘ e Boston Tea Party’ where he took part in the suppression of the a ermath revolution. While he was there he received news of the birth of his daughter Frances Elizabeth. In 1775 he was promoted to ‘Master and Commander’ of an old sloop HMS Cruizer and such was his fearsome reputation by the Americans that he was called ‘ e Terror of Cape Fear’. e Royal Governor of North Carolina, Josiah Martin, took up residence on the ship a er being evicted from his o cial residence. Due to the retreat of the British army from the Carolinas, his sloop was run ashore and burnt because it was too old and un t for further warfare. Francis returned to England to captain a frigate. A second daughter, Charlotte Mary was born in 1775. He was promoted to Post Captain in 1778, sat on the court martial of Admiral Hon. Augustus Keppel (who was acquitted) following the Battle of Ushant, in 1779 and by 1783 had climbed further up the promotional ladder to be Commodore of a small squadron under the command of Admirals Hood and Rodney, once again being sent to the Americas and Caribbean ghting the French and Spanish. While there, he received news of the birth of a third daughter, Ann. Peace eventually came to the West Indies and America in 1783, and in a run-down of the eet, his ship HMS Actaeon returned back to Portsmouth, where Francis Grave of Vice Admiral Francis Parry at All Saints Church, Fawley
