Visitors to Barton on Sea, Milford on Sea, Calshot, Hordle Cli beach and Naish will be reminded by Crabby, a sharp- eyed crab watching out from billboards and displays, to take their rubbish home, with free bag dispensers installed to make doing the right thing even easier. Cllr David Russell, NFDC’s portfolio holder for people and places said: “Littering is a concern for us all. Not only does it look a mess and make it difficult to enjoy our beaches and outdoor spaces, but uncontained rubbish is costly to clean up and can be a danger to people, wildlife, and coastal creatures. Last year, Crabby’s prominent messages to visitors, combined with providing bags to take rubbish away, was so effective at reducing littering that we have expanded the approach to more of the district’s popular beaches, to help keep our area become entangled in the rubbish. Alongside the displays and provision of litter bags, the council is increasing its patrols, emptying bins more frequently in busy areas and providing bigger bins where possible, to manage the expected increased volumes of litter from additional visitors staying in the UK again this summer. Littering is a criminal o ence which can result in an £80 ne. O cers will be looking out for those littering and taking action against those caught. In an email on Tuesday 25th May 2021 Bob Jackson con rmed he would be leaving the authority on 13th August, a er a 44 year career in local government, 13 years of which have been at NFDC with six years as the Chief Executive. Council Leader Cllr Edward Heron said: “ I am hugely grateful to Bob for all he has done in his role for us here at the district council. A challenging position in the world of local government, and never more so than during the past year. As Chief Executive he has calmly and astutely managed the authority through some high-level projects in his time with us, and his pragmatic approach will be missed by colleagues and councillors alike”.
