Chorus director John Masters said : “It has been a tough time for most choirs but we have managed to keep interest high by making the most of the internet. It has not been easy but we are a tight-knit group and have been keeping in touch with our members throughout so that we are ready to carry on as soon as the restrictions are lifted. Anyone from choirs who have not been so fortunate are more than welcome to come along, see what we do and join in for three months for free to see if they like it. Many current Ocean Harmony members had never sung before they joined us.” Ocean Harmony has grown steadily since it was formed in 2003 and performs locally as well as taking part in local and national competitions. Its best performances have come in recent years - claiming 12th place in the prestigious British Association of Barbershop Singers UK competition in 2019. “You do not have to take part in the competitions to be part of Ocean Harmony,” added John. “It is just one small part of what we do. Singing locally and social events are just as important to us.” Barbershop singing is made up of four sections - bass, lead, tenor and baritone - which blend to give the chorus its unique sound. Anyone interested in giving a cappella singing a try will be given free tuition for three months at the choir’s weekly meeting on Wednesday evenings at Colbury Memorial Hall, Ashurst (7.30pm).
