Held during National Volunteers Week , Wessex Heartbeat’s generous helpers were invited to the charity’s very own Heartbeat House for a cream tea event. With a stellar guest list comprising of trustees, patients and their families that have been actively involved with the charity for more than 29 years, the beloved regional charity paid tribute to their supporters a er facing a testing year. John Munro, Chief Executive of Wessex Heartbeat, said: “The ongoing pandemic has come with its challenges for the charity sector, and we have had to think of unique ways to raise money and awareness during lockdown. Our incredible volunteers ensure we can receive the funds we need to continue the work we do. Over the years, we have welcomed hundreds of volunteers to the Wessex Heartbeat family, with many of them being former patients that have benefited under our care. Without them, and donations from our remarkable supporters, we would not be able to provide our vital service to heart patients and their families. Hosting this special event during Volunteers Week is the least we can do.” It’s not just Wessex Heartbeat that bene ts from the sel ess contributions from its helpers, however. Volunteering has been shown to have a positive impact on the lives of the volunteers themselves as they learn new skills and receive a well-earned boost to their self- esteem. Sandra Snelgar, who has been working with Wessex Heartbeat for more than 8 years, speaks about the impact volunteering has had on her own wellbeing. She said: “Volunteering for this wonderful charity has not only allowed me to make a difference to a cause close to my heart, but it’s also equipped me with excellent life skills and experience and has had a hugely positive impact on my mental health.” Sandra, along with fellow volunteer, Margaret Starling, have been supporting the heart charity which has helped their mutual grandson, who is a heart patient. e grandmas have been placing donation tins in shops and cafes, have marshalled at the charity’s cycle sportive event, and have helped on several fundraising occasions. “I urge others to get involved,” added Sandra. I’ve learnt new skills and gained a different outlook through their webinars to help me get in a positive place to progress forward in my life.” CEO and co-founder Fiona Eastman started Victoria’s Promise in 2014 following the loss of her daughter Victoria to cancer. Having experienced family deaths due to cancer, in 2013 29-year-old Victoria Van Der Westhuizen was herself diagnosed with an aggressive and rare form of the disease. Victoria’s husband, mother and brother had no hesitation in joining her to live in her hospital bedroom to form a united force against cancer. is loving support gave Victoria even more determination to ght, during which time she vowed to use her insights to help others facing a cancer diagnosis. Victoria’s promise was to make sure no woman ever felt alone during this experience. Despite showing great courage and determination, Victoria sadly passed away within weeks of her diagnosis. Inspired by her vision, her family upheld her promise by establishing the charity. CEO Fiona is passionate about guiding others towards having a greater understanding of themselves, their values and skills, and considers herself honoured and privileged to now be an instrument in helping others. Fiona said: “My own purpose in life is to loyally support others with love and understanding so they find joyous peace knowing their true self.” Victoria’s Promise supports women who face a cancer diagnosis, instilling hope and fortitude. is comes from providing the comfort of a community of like-minded individuals, as well as o ering tools to build their empowerment and resilience. e charity’s vision is to build a community of young women discovering peace, joy, connection, and understanding as they are supported and empowered to ourish through cancer. e new app is an instrumental step forward in achieving this. Victoria’s Promise can also provide counselling for immediate family members throughout the journey and, in some cases, help them to navigate the nal stages of palliative care, as well as provide ongoing support for the family.
