At the beginning of July, it also restarted some of its hands-on therapies. One of these is lymphoedema massage. About Lymphoedema e lymphatic system is a network of channels and glands that ghts infection and removes excess uid. Lymphoedema (pronounced lim-fo-dee-ma), is a long-term condition that develops when the lymphatic system doesn’t work properly, causing swelling in the body’s tissues. It can a ect any part of the body, but most commonly the arms and legs. Lymphoedema is thought to a ect around 200,000 people in the UK and is more common in those living with cancer. Colette Cowan, Wessex Cancer Trust’s Head of Services, says: “Lymphoedema can be emotionally and psychologically debilitating, and finding the right care and support for swelling can be difficult. To help, we provide specialised lymphatic massage at our Chandler’s Ford and Waterside Support Centres. It’s really important that clients receive the most up-to- date help, advice and treatment for lymphoedema and our treatment is non-invasive and suitable for most people.” Michele Gibson is a complementary therapist and re exologist at Wessex Cancer Trust. She says the charity is rare in providing free and local hands-on lymphoedema massage, with many people having to rely on their own self-care, which can be daunting: “Lymphatic drainage is a type of specialised and gentle massage that encourages lymph fluid to move away from the swollen area so it can drain normally. It also helps lymph fluid drain through the healthy lymph vessels. As well as reducing and controlling swelling, it can prevent infection, improve your sleep and generally help you to feel much better. The key to lymphatic massage is consistency, so it’s been lovely welcoming back clients for this treatment and know they’re getting it regularly, rather than them having to do it themselves. My clients have told me they’re relieved to be back and I know they find the treatments supportive and relaxing. I understand the emotional impacts of cancer and this condition, and I think that really helps people feel supported by someone they can trust, and that they’re not alone. Ultimately, our aim is to encourage our clients to manage the condition themselves by carrying out their own simple massages, but those one-to-one sessions at the beginning really do help to get in the mindset and build confidence.” Please get in touch with the Waterside Cancer Support Centre on: 023 8178 0409 or email: waterside@ wessexcancer.org.uk to see how they can help. 1. Eating disorders and tooth enamel If an eating disorder involves vomiting, stomach acids wash over teeth and can dissolve the hard enamel covering. Changes in colour, shape, translucency, or sensitivity may provide clues to an underlying problem that can lead to extensive decay and tooth loss over time. 2. Anemia and pale gums Pale gums can be caused by anaemia, commonly due to an iron de ciency. Some colour variations exist between individuals, and we’re most concerned THE TOP 5 HEALTH ISSUES YOUR TEETH CAN REVEAL by the experts at ExpressDentist.com about swollen, ulcerative, or painful gums. But a follow-up with a physician can provide clear answers and peace of mind whenever changes appear that suggest underlying systemic causes. 3. Osteoporosis and tooth loss e bone around your teeth provides the foundation that supports them. While it may be di cult to detect at home, dentists and hygienists may be the rst to suspect a systemic change in bone density due to osteoporosis. Teeth that move more than average during an exam could provide an early clue to this progressive condition. We o en recommend a bone density test with a physician in these cases. 4. Oral Thrush and HIV We don’t expect to see oral thrush in patients with normal immunity unless they’re denture wearers. But as the virus weakens the immune system in HIV patients, they become more susceptible to thrush and other more severe infections. A general physical exam and blood tests can help provide answers. 5. Tooth Loss and kidney disease Kidney disease can cause mouth sores, changes in taste, and dry mouth from xerostomia, a reduction in saliva production. When the mouth dries out, acidity increases, and the low pH may result in aggressive tooth decay and eventual tooth loss. Some research also shows that patients with gum disease have an increased risk of kidney disease, another two-way relationship between oral and systemic health.
