As they were unable to meet in 2020, members entered carvings created during the past 2 years and also brought along their annual Wood Block creations. Dorothy Lockyer narrowly won the Fred Wilson Trophy with her nely carved ‘child in the hand’ and Andy Wainman won the Shield with his ‘sharks’. is year, with so many relatively new carvers, there was also a Novice category, won by Jake Young with a very realistic ‘guinea pig’. e Wood Block Challenge had the theme ‘In the Woods’, which generated a wide range of carvings. is time Roger Elliott and Pippa Smith were joint winners with a ‘toadstool and autumn leaves’ and a ‘snail’. Jake Young also won the Novice category with a ‘bird on its nest and eggs’. Jake will have to enter the experienced carver category in future! e high turnout was a testament to the commitment of the members in spite of the pandemic preventing most of their group activities for the past 18 months. ere was a lot of news to catch up on. e club is hoping to resume regular evening and free parking is available at the front of the church, o Beaulieu Rd, or at the back in Oak Road car park. ere will be a ‘touch-table’, well over a hundred carvings, demonstrations of carving techniques and British Champion carver Maggie Port will demonstrate how to create special e ects with pyrography. is outstanding exhibition has previously been held in Lymington. It will provide a fantastic opportunity to see the incredible ingenuity and quality of cra smanship with wood and to meet the members and nd out more about this vibrant club. Visitors can even vote for their favourite carving. In the meantime they are holding an exhibition of woodcarvings at St Andrews on Saturday 18th September, 3-5pm. Entry is free CHEERFUL CHINWAGGERS ARE BACK It’s Wednesday morning halfway through the week and you’re wondering to yourself ‘what can I do today?’ Why not go along to Chinwaggers to bring a smile to your face? They meet between 9.50am and 11.50am each Wednesday morning at Garland Lodge (the Scout HQ) in Blackwater Drive, Calmore. Buses stop right outside the door (Bluestar No 12 and the City Red No 1). ey may be able to o er a minibus service to and from your door but there is a charge for that. ey promise you no membership fee and no weekly charge so just pop in and give it a try. eir ages range from 40 to 97 – men and women, take your children if you want. Go with a friend or alone and you’ll be made very welcome. It’s very possible that you’ll recognise a face or two. Most of the morning is spent talking with friends over tea or co ee, then it’s a short game of bingo and a ra e. ey have various outings and events every year, plus of course their annual Christmas Dinner Party.
