PICKERING STEPS UP TO THE PLATE 35 New Forest Golf Club Seniors competed for this year’s Summer Plate strokeplay competition off the white tees. Although Division 1’s Laurie Burn produced 5 birdies and 9 pars to come in 4 under par with nett 65, this was not quite enough because in Division 2 John Pickering simply burned the course up ending 8 under par with nett 61 to win the Summer Plate. Results; Division 1: 1st Lawrence Burn nett 65, 2nd Phil Wright also nett 65, 3rd Mike Broom nett 66; Division 2: 1st John Pickering nett 61, 2nd Pete Bennett nett 67, 3rd Ross Matthews nett 70. Trophy winner John Pickering earns the Summer Plate Pairs Aggregate Cup In a welcome change from recent weather on Tuesday 27th July, cooler temperatures and some light rain heralded the shotgun start of New Forest Golf Club Seniors’ Pairs Aggregate Cup, a combined stableford competition off the white tees. e weather soon reverted to warmer drier conditions and the battle for 1st place became intense with two teams nishing tied on 76 points. Colin Firth and Mike Broom gained the upper hand by virtue of their higher back nine score, with Dave Senior and Terry Jones coming second. Frank Lockley and Lionel Burns came third with a highly creditable 72 points. If you know a child interested in starting a new sport or perhaps they’ve enjoyed rugby at school and would like to learn more then why not go along? ey train on Sunday mornings from 10am and all age groups are represented from school years R-11. ey have professionally trained coaches, full rst aid support and welcoming supporters. ey do not require any previous experience and there is no try out to get on a team. Training is o en supplemented with mid-week sessions and regular matches are arranged. Young players are guided and coached and all abilities are welcomed. If you are interested in joining or would like to go along and see what it’s all about please go to Gang Warily rugby elds opposite the Recreation Centre on Sunday 5th September at 10am. Registration for returning players will be open from 9.30am. Junior Rugby Back on the Waterside in September Kelso Turton Trophy On 29th July, the weather could not have been much better with the temperature having dropped several degrees to a comfortable 20 or so Celsius, while it remained dry and generally sunny. is pairs Texas Scramble played with ¼ combined handicap o the white tees attracted a large eld of over 40 New Forest Golf Club Seniors. The course seemed longer than ever but scoring was generally very competitive as re ected in the results: 1st place was awarded to Laurie Burn and Neil Edmondson with 59.5, 2nd went to Gill Wright and Phil Kilburn with 61.25 , Alan Gill and Chris Webb scooped 3rd with a score of 62.25 and 4th place was presented to Hugh Marchant and Dave Stredder with a score of 63.25. Trophy winners (left to right) Laurie Burn and Neil Edmondson August Monthly Medals Tuesday 3rd August brought beautiful sunshine and dry weather for the 37 New Forest Golf Club Seniors competing for the August Monthly Medal. Competition was erce in Division 1, Richard Hammond finishing with an excellent nett 66, however Laurie Burn with 6 birdies and 7 pars snatched the medal on countback. Ross Matthews scored nett 66 in great style to win the Division 2 medal, two ahead of Trevor Davies . Results: Division 1: 1st Laurie Burn nett 66, 2nd Richard Hammond nett 66, 3rd Alan Clifford nett 67. Division 2: 1st Ross Matthews nett 66, 2nd Trevor Davies nett 68, 3rd Alan Gill nett 70. Medal winners (l-r) Ross Matthews and Laurie Burn WE FOUR TROPHY On 22nd July, in glorious sunshine, 36 New Forest Seniors competed in the 4 ball Texas Scramble competition o the yellow tees. Each team was allowed one tenth of their combined course handicaps. e winners Steve Lupton, Dave Senior, Ian Tyrrell and Graham Fearis ended with an amazing 54.7, while second place team Ross Matthews, David Jones, John Cockshott and Dave Barrett came in with a highly respectable 58.7.
