Send your local news to The Editor, The Herald, 2 High Street, Hythe SO45 6AH or email editor@herald-publishing.co.uk NEW Calshot Water Sports Area Over the last two years, Calshot Activities Centre has been working with ABP Southampton to improve the safety of all water users who use the lagoon and the stretch of water from the north of the spit to the Fawley channel. They are pleased to announce that ABP issued a General Direction last week which de nes a new water sports area as per the details below which is taken directly from ABP’s notice to mariners; 1. e area bounded by the Calshot Spit and the Fawley Power Station channel and as marked by yellow special marks, is designated as a water sports area (“Calshot Water sports Area”). 2. e Calshot Water sports Area provides a safe area for dinghy and day- boat sailing, windsur ng, kitesurfing and paddle sports. Kitesurfing is not permitted in the Water sports area between 1st April to 31st October. 3. Authorised support and rescue cra involved in support of these activities can also operate within the Calshot Watersports Area. 4. Within the Calshot Water sports Area, all other powered cra not providing safety cover must adhere to a 6-knot speed limit. 5. e Calshot Water sports Area must not be used for activities involving the towing of persons. ere are new signs up and around the launch areas to ensure all those launching from the site understand the new general direction. Sta will continue to be present on the slipway where possible to inform all customers of the rules. is is a great addition to the area around the spit as it will ensure all those wishing to access the water are able to do it safely. However, ABP and Calshot Activity Centre confirms new designated water sport area the Marine Police have the powers to prosecute any users of this area who do not adhere to the above rules.
