Local Lady Abbie Hills shortlisted for the Positive Role Model Award at the National Diversity Awards 2021 Treasure Beyond Measure “I’m looking for someone who can draw animals” was the plea shared on Facebook by New Zealand author, Helen Gri ths. Little did she know that the call would be answered by Waterside illustrator Simon Chadwick. “It’s serendipitous that Simon agreed to do the project” says Helen who herself lived in Chandlers Ford before moving to New Zealand in 2006. “I’m sure the mutual Hampshire connection helped.” Simon recently achieved success with ‘A Seal Swam in from the Sea’ which raised funds to save the Hythe Ferry. roughout 2020, the pair worked together from opposite sides of the planet to create ‘Treasure Beyond Measure’ – a sophisticated picture book that has since garnered high pro le responses from HRH the Duke of Cambridge, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and even a handwritten note from Sir David Attenborough himself. e book takes readers on a Collective Noun Safari where they journey through the pages discovering funny and fascinating names for groups of animals. However, the trip takes a surprising turn when faced with one extremely dangerous creature; a species that steers the Safari in a completely different and thought- provoking direction. Indeed, it’s a literary ride that ended up in the company of Dr Seuss, JK Rowling and David Walliams when it made the Unity Books Bestseller list upon release. Simon said, “It’s the most intricate book I’ve worked on to date, and the cover alone packs in countless animals that were great fun to draw. Hopefully children will love searching out the animals as much as I’ve loved illustrating it.” On reading the book, Donna Head, Editor at e Herald says: “ The illustrations are a feast for the eyes. The level of detail and expression Simon has intricately woven into each character is phenomenal, and with such a powerful storyline I can see why this book has caught the attention of so many. What a lucky community we are to have such talent on our doorstep”.
