Listing marks a building’s signi cance and celebrates its special architectural and historic interest. It brings speci c protection so that its special interest can be properly considered in managing its future. Hythe Pier was built in 1879-1880 and o cially opened on 1st January 1881. It has served the communities of Hythe and the Waterside for 140 years, allowing access to the ferry service to Southampton at all states of the tide and in all weather conditions. Designed by eminent engineer John Dixon and built by contractors Bergheim & Co. of London at a cost of £7,700, Hythe Pier is the seventh longest in the United Kingdom. It quickly became the focal point of Hythe village with promenading, shing and bathing becoming popular pastimes alongside the ferry access. Buildings were subsequently added on the pier head, to be occupied by the Hythe Sailing Club which had instigated the Hythe Pier Regatta that regularly attracted large crowds. A er the First World War, the Royal Motor Yacht Club extended the southern building to include dining facilities, sleeping quarters and a bathroom. ere was also a roof viewing platform. A restaurant operated in this building until the mid- 1970s. On the opposite side of the pier head there was a café in what is now the waiting room until the late 1980s. Both of these buildings are “listed” along with the pier itself. e electric railway, using locomotives procured from a War O ce redundant stock catalogue and bespoke rolling stock was introduced in 1922. Hythe Pier Heritage Association, which is undertaking a programme of restoration on the railway, will celebrate its centenary in July 2022.
