Enter the Haunted Barn at your peril from Saturday 23rd October through to Sunday 31st October 2021 . Look out for the grimacing ghouls, scary skeletons, and wicked witches who dwell among the cobweb-strewn haybales and blackened timbers of the dreaded Haunted Barn. Keep your eyes peeled and join in with the Pumpkin Quest. Ten rogue pumpkins have escaped from the Pumpkin Patch! Children will enjoy spotting the mischievous orange faces around the farm as they discover each naughty pumpkin in unexpected places. No prizes, just spookily good fun. Meet a real-life barn owl with e Creature Teachers who will be in the Haunted Barn along with some creeeepy creatures like spiders, millipedes and children’s entertainer, Crazy M will be ready to calm everybody’s nerves in the Haunted Barn with her goofy gags and side-splitting mini shows (check website for dates). A er all the scary stu , calm down with their friendly farm animals. Join in when you want to with a full schedule of farm activities lasting all day, which includes bottle-feeding kid goats and calves, small animal handling in the Animal Encounter Barn, and feeding the ducks. Capped daily numbers and Covid-secure controls will be observed. Longdown Activity Farm and the Farm Shop will be open daily, as usual, for the whole of half-term. If you have very young children (or nervous adults!), the zany SHOEBOX TIME It’s that time of year again when Hythe & Waterside Rotary are collecting for the Shoebox Scheme to provide disadvantaged children in Albania, Montenegro, Moldova and Romania to receive a gi of toys, books and toiletries at Christmas time. International Customs require items which must be for education, health and hygiene purposes. Lea ets explaining the requirements, e.g. what contents to choose from, what size of box to use and who to contact to have the boxes collected, are available from the Herald o ce in Hythe. Closing date for donations is 25th October 2021 . Donors are asked to sellotape a £1 donation towards transport and administration costs to the top of their boxes. Giving gift boxes in Romania Hythe Pier Locos Star on Forces TV News Hythe Pier’s iconic 99 years old railway were featured on a Forces Television News Bulletin at the beginning of September. Presenter Tim Cooper told of the “Dark Past” of the tractor units built in 1917 to convey materials of war in an Avonmouth munitions factory that manufactured mustard gas, a chemical weapon. Local ferry historian and author Alan Titheridge was interviewed and told how they came to be in Hythe. e then owner of both the ferry and the pier, Mr omas Percy, found them in a catalogue of surplus materials issued by the War O ce a er the ending of WWI. By July 1922, with the expert assistance of engineer Gerald Yorke, ferry passengers for the price of one penny no longer had to walk the 700 yards along the pier to catch the ferry to Southampton. Tim Cooper told later in the four minutes feature that during the mid-1930s that Gerald Yorke was recommending withdrawing the tractors and scrapping them in favour of railcars as they had a limited time le . Eighty years later they are still an integral part of life in Hythe. Driver Ken Crosby was also interviewed, sitting in a cab explaining the controls and telling how much a pleasure is his job, the tractor’s eccentricities and quirkiness making it all the more so.
