Before winter draws in, there’s no better time to grab your wellies and get crunching along in those leaves with your family. Exbury Gardens Exbury Gardens in Beaulieu is truly sumptuous in autumn. Its huge site (200 acres) provides a plethora of acers and nyssa trees with their vibrant reds and oranges, along with dogwoods and grand oak trees that provide a background canvas of golden yellow. e main paths are well maintained so great for buggies and strollers, but there are plenty of small paths if older children want to wander the wooded areas. If you have younger children, they’ll fall in love with the miniature railway which is running a haunted ghost train this October half term – perfect for some spooky fun. www.exbury.co.uk Ober Water – New Forest is trail is great for families with smaller children. e walks are short and manageable for little legs, with a huge bonus being toilets available at the White eld Moor car park. You can access this walk from three di erent car parks, Beechern Wood, White eld Moor or Puttles Bridge and at 2.3 miles it’s a gentle stroll for the whole family. If you’re lucky, the ice cream van might make an appearance at White eld Moor car park or you can walk a little further into Brockenhurst to stop at one of its tea rooms. www.newforestwalks.co.uk/walks/ ober-water Hillier Gardens Hillier Gardens is another huge site (180 acres) that provides ample space for the whole family, with children under 5 going free. It has a great choice of fun activities for children to do, including ying on their magic carpet swing, exploring the tree house, wandering over the wobbly bridge and running through the bamboo tunnels. For nature lovers, you’ll be blown away by the glorious autumn colours and you’ll be able to spot ornamental fruits on the cotoneasters, crab apple, hawthorns, hollies and Sorbus plants. www.hants.gov . uk/thingstodo/hilliergardens Bolderwood Bolderwood in the New Forest is great for combining some walking with a little nature spot t ing. Nestled in Bolderwood is Bolderwood Deer Sanctuary, with a purpose-built deer spotting platform where you can keep your eyes peeled for the shy animals. Sometimes you might even be lucky enough to see a herd of deer being fed by a Forestry England Ranger. Even if you don’t get a glimpse of the deer, there’s plenty of other nature on o er and Bolderwood is a great choice for walks. With three circular routes, suitable for buggies and wheelchairs, none of the walks are longer than 2 miles so they’re a great choice for little legs.
