Sourcing much of their produce locally, you can be assured of excellent quality and great value. For many of you, the name Sargents Butchers is synonymous with the name Steve Taylor who ran the business for several decades. Steve has now passed the baton to Jonty Larkin who, along with partner Kiera Smith, recently took full ownership of Sargents. Any Sargents regulars will know Jonty, and will no doubt be reassured that one of the Waterside’s longest operating businesses is in safe hands. So why do people take the trouble of visiting a butcher? Quite simply, the quality of the meat is superior to what you’ll nd shrink-wrapped in a supermarket. Simply buy a few rashers of Sargents’ bacon and cook it alongside a supermarket equivalent to see the di erence for yourself. If you’re someone who feels a little intimidated by what to buy and how much of it, the Sargents team are there to help. eir butchers can give you exactly the cut you need, in the amount you require, and can advise you on how to cook it and how to store it to avoid waste. Sargents aim to make your experience a great one, and o er all the guidance you need. Sargents also stock homemade pies, biltong, scotch eggs, cheeses, sauces, free-range farm eggs and much more. You can even go online and take advantage of their online ordering service. Taking over the reins, Jonty Larkin and partner Kiera Smith Kiera the very best of luck in their venture, and by supporting this important, and unique, local business. So please join us in wishing Jonty and Clouds Talk for Friends of Lepe We have a tendency to look up to see what weather might be coming our way, and that usually means studying cloud formations. Have you ever thought about what these clouds are, apart from that they are black or white and u y? To nd out Friends of Lepe Country Park attended, with a good turnout, a ‘talk for the Interested lay Person about Clouds’ by Trevor Guymer, held at the Black eld Baptist Church. Trevor Guymer was involved with the UK Interagency Committee for Marine Science and Technology and was also head of Oceanic Circulation and Climate Division at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton. Trevor talked the Friends gently through the stages of cloud formation and how they are classi ed and how to enhance our understanding of clouds. How dark brooding clouds can create atmosphere and mystery, or white pu y clouds help to give photos de nition. How many of us have used our imagination whilst looking at clouds and deciding if they looked like a dog or a butter y? Trevor’s talkwas a great balance between the scienti c and the artistic, he gave examples of quotes about clouds from Socrates, Jesus in the bible and some of the romantic poets showing how they have been appreciated throughout the ages. He also showed some amazing satellite images demonstrating where and how hurricanes form and how they develop as they batter the Caribbean Islands or Eastern American coastline. We were assured that we don’t have hurricanes in this country but only hurricane force winds occasionally! e group was enchanted with the talk and will now look at cloud formations with new interest. e Friends hold various events such as walks, talks and visits throughout the year and provide volunteering opportunities at Lepe Country Park, new members are always welcome.
