Remember that in uenza type pandemics tend to wane a er 1-2 years. So, try not to be anxious. Hand-washing and covering your mouth if you cough or sneeze, are always obvious sensible precautions. And do stay at home if you feel o -colour; don’t brave it out, especially this year. One top tip, which may come as a surprise is sleep; the body needs time to rest and recharge. e late Alfred Vogel, a Swiss Naturopath, worked on the principle that the hours before midnight were more valuable than those a er. True or not, it becomes clear that winter nights would naturally encourage early sleep. Getting out in nature and into the fresh air is another simple step. Having both the sea and the New Forest on our doorstep, there is no excuse. Catching what sunlight you can replenishes the body’s reserves of vitamin D, which is proven to reduce respiratory infections. Even if the weather is so-so, get your coat and hat on and go for a walk. Dog owners will have no excuse - a collie we once owned, used to sit up and block the television screen … “walk time”! Remember Cod Liver Oil from your childhood? Guess what; Cod Liver Oil is a great source of vitamin D. In northern climes almost everyone is de cient in this vitamin in the winter months, if you are not keen on Cod Liver Oil, take a vitamin D3 supplement. Vitamin C is well recognised for its anti-viral properties, and a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables is the best daily source. Should you become unwell consider high doses of vitamin C for just 24-48 hours then tail o . You will need to research dosage rates taking account of any health conditions, but su ce to say that both these vitamins are safe if used sensibly. Homeopathy can help also, but that is another and more complex story.
