Disassembly has shown it to be in a considerably poorer condition than was the case with Carriage 4, which was restored and put back on track earlier this year. e side and end panels have been stripped away whilst the roof has been li ed and suspended above the bare chassis framework which has been found to need some reconstruction. Unlike with Carriage 4, much of the original side and end frames and panels will need replacing with new. e new frames for the seaward side are complete and ready for installation once the chassis sub frame has been repaired. As with Carriage 4 however, the seating and doors have been found to be in comparatively good condition and will be reused. Carriages 1 and 4, both of which have been gi ed to HPHA by Blue Funnel Ferries, are a pair ordered by the then pier and ferry owner, Mr. omas Percy, in October 1921, arriving in Hythe in May and June 1922 before being put into service when the train began operating towards the end of July 1922. e Beaulieu Beaufort Foundation, a charity established to support local organisations and individuals, has awarded HPHA a grant of £10,000 towards the project. HPHA Project Manager Tina Brown says: “Volunteers from the Shed (at the Pier) are working continuously on the restoration of the second carriage along with the engineers at Blue Funnel Ferries to complete the sub frame and bogies. We are working to plan with an aim to finish by June next year”. is will be a timely nish as Carriage 1 would be put back on track in time for HPHA’s Centenary Celebration in July 2022. Supplying laptops, smartphones and tablets will go a long way to ensuring families can keep in contact with loved ones who may be very far away and start accessing vital services that will help them in the resettlement process.” Community First will continue to update donation requirements on their website.
