At their lunch time stop they were met by Pete Wales, Chairman of Brockenhurst Parish Council who welcomed them with the news that the Parish Council had decided to donate £100 to WCT. is year’s event had a special signi cance for Philip. In 2016 before his cancer diagnosis New Forest Rotary Club had heard about some amazing work by a local artist, Martin Bradley, who had produced a series of children’s books focusing on wild birds in their local environment. He was promoting a love of nature made a donation of £350 to Myeloma UK. So now the books are committed for children in long stay wards in the children’s hospital and Martin, as very accomplished artist, is dedicating some of his time to his love of drawing birds of prey. A selection of Martin’s books are also currently on sale at the Herald O ce in Hythe. His presentation showed how a few simple tips included in the book allowed youngsters to draw convincing pictures. A er his presentation at the club Philip bought a set to send to his nephew’s young lad. e feedback was brilliant with a resulted in lovely drawing of a king sher. en shortly a er that Philip was diagnosed with a terminal blood cancer which could only be cured by a bone marrow blood stem cell transplant. So, whilst in hospital he had the picture of the king sher to remind him of what he was looking forward to, and an extra set of the books to help while away the time by taking up drawing. He then passed those books onto the children’s ward. ree years later a er completing the latest Walk for Hope he remembered how those books had been really helpful so he contacted Martin to see if the New Forest Rotary Club could purchase some more with a view to passing them on to the Piam Brown children’s cancer ward at Southampton General. As it was Martin had heard about the Wessex Cancer Trust drop-in centre at Hythe and made a donation of 50 books of each of the 3 series to the Rotary Club, and the Rotary Club SOLENT CONCERT ORCHESTRA REVIEW e Solent Concert Orchestra gave a concert on the evening of 23rd October at the Cornerstone Church, Hythe in aid of church and orchestral funds and the HASAG Asbestos Disease Support charity. e concert was dedicated to the memory of the orchestra’s long- serving trumpeter David Parsons who sadly died last year. Notwithstanding the current COVID-19 restrictions there was a capacity audience all of whom were masked, as were the string players of the orchestra, in compliance with the latest safety recommendations. Under the baton of musical director Simon Wilkins and leader Ken omas, the programme commenced with ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ (Copeland) as a tribute to David Parsons. is was followed by an impressive performance of Beethoven’s ‘Coriolan Overture’ by the full orchestra. Next, by way of a contrast, came conductor of the orchestra. e second half got o to a ying start with the ever- popular opening to Tchaikovsky’s ‘Swan Lake’ followed by the lazy, dri ing melodies of ‘Trade Winds’ by Ronald Binge. Next came the well-known ‘Waltz No.2 from the Jazz Suite No.2’ by Shostakovich and an expressive ‘Tango in D’ by Albeniz. e evening concluded with a musical ip from Paris to London by means of Gershwin’s ‘An American in Paris’ and Eric Coates’s ‘Knightsbridge’ march. e orchestra cleverly contrasted musically images of chaotic Parisian thoroughfares with the bustle of London streets. is was the orchestra’s second concert under the ‘new normal’ regime and if the reaction of the audience was anything to go by it was a resounding success. Once again, the orchestra’s loyal patron, Dr. Julian Lewis MP, was in attendance. e next concert is on Saturday 12th March 2022 at St Michael and All Angels Church, Lyndhurst. Further details available on the orchestra’s website: www.solentconcertorchestra.org.uk Leroy Anderson’s jaunty ‘Jazz Pizzicato’ and Gustav Holst’s ‘St. Paul’s Suite’ both featuring the orchestra’s string sections. Next it was the turn of the wind and brass sections with Bartok’s ‘Romanian Folk Dances’. e rst half concluded with a lively rendition of ‘Lymington Quay’ written by Tony Kitcherside, a former Musical Director and e Royal British Legion, Fawley is once again getting the disco ball spinning by hosting its ever-popular Charity Disco .
