From commoners’ cottages to modern eco-homes, historic barns to public buildings, the area’s mosaic of buildings and their setting in the landscape contribute to the special character of the New Forest National Park. The annual awards recognise the best new developments within the National Park, giving the community, property owners, professional agents and others the chance to nominate schemes for an award. Previous winners have included the Peppa Pig building at Paulton’s Park; a new gallery space created next to the listed Clock House on the Beaulieu Estate; and residential schemes with proportions and materials sympathetic to their setting within the New Forest landscape. Nominations are invited for schemes completed over the last three years which enhance or protect the built environment of the National Park in the following categories: • Best residential scheme (household extensions, new dwellings, conversions to residential) • Non-residential scheme (for example employment or educational sites, public buildings, visitor attractions) • Best conservation project (extensions to a Listed Building, restoration of a Listed Building, repair of a Building at Risk) • Best green building (showcasing sustainable construction and materials) Gordon Bailey, chair of the New Forest National Park Authority’s Planning Committee said: “Our annual awards celebrate good design in the National Park and reflect the importance given nationally to high-quality development through the National Design Guide and the Government’s National Design Code. We have recently prepared an updated draft Design Guide setting out a new approach to building design, offering greater clarity and detail on sustainable construction, lighting and materials for new developments within the National Park. The Building Design Awards recognise the positive contribution new development can make to the character of the area and we look forward to reviewing the nominations people submit.” e closing date for entries is 31st December 2021 , and winners will be selected by a panel of members drawn from the National Park Authority’s Planning Committee.
